True bird, after 15 years air brakes may need some maintenance. ;)

If air leaks, there is an acousic warning of loudly hissing air. If you cant hear it, it just wastes air pressure but there is no safety issue at all, because the compressor just draws air from its unlimited supply...
heavy duty axles from 3,5 ton and higher, all have automatic slack adjusters on their S-cam brakes which dont need any service for 20 years on normal use. At least, we never had to open an air braked axle since our company started using them in 1986.

Hydraulic brakes do require some maintenance, because you cant hear a leak, because the amount of oil is limited to the capacity of the brake oil tank, and because leaked brake oil soaks into the brake linings.
