I actually bought threaded rod (I think it was 3/4") with two thread on nuts for each side- then I would thread on both nuts so it was short enough to fit in the holes where the aluminum rod used to be and then unwind the nuts into the holes. This worked well and when the can got cracked and need replacement I just put it in the new can. I like the idea of just leaving the can or cans on a trailer.
