I too am a shop teacher. A dying breed if you ask me. It is a shame.

I really think it will work if he can slow it down and take small bites and soft ground, Think about it, it's just a paddle wheel.
I have thought about something similar with a disc brake rotor? How large do they get

Look at the bright side...if it doesn't dig like you expect, mount a couple of pontoons on the sides of your tractor. That would make a real nice paddlewheel pontoon boat.

Ask yourself this...would you feel comfortable backing that wheel into a log?? That test would partially approximate spinning.While it might work in a pile of sand....rocks and roots are not marked with little orange flags....
