A good friend of ours has twin brothers. Back around 1970 they were out in the yard playing and one of them got shot in the chest. It just pierced the skin over his sternum and lodged in the bone. He was fine, fortunately. It was a .22. The shot was fired from a gavel pit a mile and a half away.

I've often wondered about folks hunting squirrels that are up in trees with .22s... where's it go when they miss? Hmmm....

My first time deer hunting, my boy and I climbed the first rise and at the edge of the field stood a huge wide 8 point. Massive beam. We had an easy 100 yard shot. I smiled and explained to my son we wouldn't take the shot. There was no backstop and the bullet would likely go through the deer and go at least hundreds of yard past the property line. I pointed out that the adjoining ground was public hunting and those hunters we saw just minutes prior were somewhere down in the woods beyond and below the deer. I explained I wasn't willing to risk someone else's boy or dad just so we could have a trophy. He understood and we had a great couple of days trying to find that buck. We never did find it but I'm glad to have had the chance to teach my boy about responsible shooting.

My opinion all hunting should be done with a bow and arrow. How is it a "sport" when you have a high power gun, specialty rounds, $1,000,00 scope and can hit an animal several hundred yards away. NAH, be a man, sneak up , get close use a bow - now that hunting. Otherwise it's called shooting fish in a barrel.

My opinion all hunting should be done with a bow and arrow. How is it a "sport" when you have a high power gun, specialty rounds, $1,000,00 scope and can hit an animal several hundred yards away. NAH, be a man, sneak up , get close use a bow - now that hunting. Otherwise it's called shooting fish in a barrel.

There's another theory that the gun is more humane than the bow. Anyhow, good shot placement is key no matter what you're hunting with.

Just a .22?

Back in the 80s, I remember an article. Most people were shot with a .22 and most died within 48 hours. A nasty little round that doesn't quite know which way to go upon entering the body.

Hunting is more than just a sport for some. It's about putting meat in the freezer

In most of the eastern seaboard, those fish need to be shot. There are far too many of them.

We used to live in Virginia with homes in northern Virginia and down in Northumberland County. Very familiar with deer overpopulation in both places. Quite a complex problem to solve. The Virginia State Deer Management Plan makes interesting reading.

I've raised beef cattle and had no concern over how they were killed and processed. The deer we took this year were raised on the food provided by our several hundred acres and that of our neighbors. We eat venison the same way we eat beef and pork and see no need to prove or justify my activities by using sticks, stones, spears, arrows etc, vs a firearm.
