Tresspassing Slob Hunters, Part II

No, it's just ignorance. The law says a notice must be posted, so the ignorati, not knowing what that means, put the actual word on the sign.

It's kind of like people who write the actual word, "Signed" at the bottom of a letter.

Here's a fun little article...
The Grammarphobia Blog: Why do NO HUNTING signs say “POSTED”?

In it, the author talks about how in some states land is considered closed without posting signs, and in others, land is considered open unless it is posted as not. He also says that in some of the states that require posting, only some require the actual word "Posted". However, he doesn't list any states that actually require the word "Posted". And I can't find any states that require that actual word either. All I can find is states that require you to post signage with "No Tresspassing" or "No Hunting" etc... but not the actual word "Posted". And some states require posting only one sign on each side of the property, some require a sign every so many feet apart on all sides, and some require just one at the main entrance, and, some require none at all. But no finds of the word "Posted" being required on any of the signage.... yet. Maybe someone with specific knowledge of a state that requires that word can pop in and we can then look at the law for that state.

I always find it interesting the differences in state laws. So many. :)

There are many out there that really don't understand that the signs apply to them. They must think it is only to keep out the "bad guys" or something.

I read a sign on facebook recently that said,

no trespassing,
if you pass this sign,
you are not only a trespasser,
but also a target.
Posted this sign to insure I get charged with murder instead of manslaughter.
Fixed for you.....

Excellent! :D

Yes, the variances are interesting, and so is the history of some of them.

Exactly! While I find those signs funny, you have to be a special kind of stupid to actually post something like that in today's legal climate.

Yeah the fact that the no trespass sign has the word "POSTED" on the actual sign drives me nuts. Under Indiana Law you must post a no trespass sign..... It does not mean the sign has to have the word POSTED on it. You must POST the sign (as in hang it on your fence or a post or whatever).

On no-trespassing signs, the word "posted" is sort of like saying "notice!" or "attention!" or "now hear this!". That's the historical use of that word on signs. I am sure it goes back to some old time tradition or manner of speaking.

No, it's just ignorance. It is the nature of ignorance to spread. It's like weed, choking out both knowledge and intelligence. Like any weed, it must be constantly fought.

I had someone drive onto my field (I mow it weekly so it is really my big backyard) and do donuts with a car, ripping up the ground quite a bit. I called the state police (live in their jurisdiction) and was told even if they could catch the driver, I have no case because I did not have signs posted to keep out. I was fuming, and thought about doing donuts in the lawn at the State Police barracks - they have no signs out either! So needless to say, I bought no trespassing signs and posted them. Its sad when we have to post no trespassing or it is acceptable to do donuts in your lawn!

I find this whole state of Connecticut to be that way.... maddening

All land herein Alabama is considered "Posted by law". Don't need any signs but I still put up some no-trespassing signs just to remind the idiots on 4 wheelers.

Your post is ironic.

The article MossRoad posted details the history of usage.

Yes it is.

I've never seen someone get so fired up about "ignorance". Makes you wonder if there is more to the story. But no matter what anyone says it will get the same response.

"No it's ignorance" LOL

Read the article. There is no state statute anywhere that says the word, ''POSTED" should be on a sign anywhere. It's there purely because people read that they need to post a sign, or that a sign needs to be posted, and in their ignorance of that simple English word they think they need to put the actual word there.

As for getting worked up about ignorance, look at our last election and tell me it doesn't matter.

But no matter what anyone says it will get the same response.

"No it's ignorance"

That's because I'm trying to be polite and refrain from calling it what it really is: stupidity.

I don't understand why it's such a big deal if the sign says posted or not. Most of them come printed that way.

Yeah, a lot of people get offended by the work ignorant. That's because the word has been used as an insult for so many years. One should know that the majority of folks would not take kindly to being called ignorant these days, even if used in the proper context.

Well, if you were going to insult, do it properly. Call them an ignoramus!
