I'm trying not to admit that I will be spending more money making my own, than buying one of the Chinese versions. I like making my own inventions at times, hoping I can make something better built and easier to use. If I can pull it off, with hydraulics to raise and rotate the beam, and an electric winch to hoist, it should be pretty slick. If I get time, I'll post some pics later of the crane construction, I need some advice on choosing the right cylinder, and coming up with the rotating base.

On my homemade excavator, I used the end off of a 3/4 ton truck axle. mount the whole thing to frame, use two single acting cylinders hooked to cable for swing and it works excellent. --- Heavy, but it works.

I like building stuff. Most everything I have has been repaired or modified to suit my needs. Equipment used for lifting usually has 10x safety factor and design features the help prevent failure.

Had a neighbor, friend, farmer, machinist and talented fabricator build a nice tractor size log wagon with self loading grapple. A retirement gift to himself for his personal use. Very professional looking and functional. He used it for a year gathering quite a bit of timber. His family found him, crushed to death by a failed pivot point one evening when he didn’t come home.
I think about that a lot when I am working, building or designing equipment and enjoying this lifestyle. Whatever you do make sure you get to come home.

Anyone have that Maxxhaul hitch crane? Will it lift a 55 gallon drum?

This is a do it yourself copy of the retail version, has no problem with a 55 gallon drum full of water.
