ULSD and Power Service - question

/ ULSD and Power Service - question #92
Yeah, I know, both our 1998 turbodiesels have watercooled EGR and it cannot do anymore for NOx reduction that it already does.

I don't know if you know it or not, but NOx proudces acid rain too.

The nitrogen isn't in the fuel either, so you just cannot catalytically remove it from crude oil like they do with the sulfur contaminant. The nitrogen is in the air, 78% of it to be exact.

Kick - The truck in that advertisement is the 2007 Classic. Not much different then the 2006. I purchased a 2007 Classic because I wanted the 2006 Diesel Engine which it has. Being a 2007 it has the new 100,000mi/5yr warranty. The ID is the word "Classic". The (new) 2007,s will have the Duramax engine that requires the ULSD.

I started this thread some time back and have learned much from the many good comments as usual. Thanks all.

Interesting discussison on diesel fuel. I can't comment on that aspect of this thread, however, I can maybe contribute a little to the GM truck concerns.

The "new" (not classic) 2007 half-ton crew cab trucks have been out for a few weeks and the super/extended cab configurations are just starting to come out now. At this time, you can't buy a new style regular cab pickup. GM seems to have capacity issues which prevent them from offering all configurations of the "new" truck upon model launch. This is important to note because...

The "new" heavy-duty trucks (in which the diesel engine is offered) have not started production. Part of this may be due to the new emissions rules for diesels but I suspect the primary reason is their capacity problems. I'm sure they'd be happy to start selling the heavy-duty trucks with gas engines--- if they could build them!

"while 90% of the rest of the civilized world continues to pollute, use high sulfur coal, dump their effluent in lakes and streams and then sell their products in this country at a lesser cost to the middle class, the exact same class that suffers the most from gummit mandated anti-pollution laws and technology. You think China gives a hoot about ULSD or unleaded gas or stack scrubbers? Or Korea or Taiwan. Wake up and smell the roses people....while you can still afford to buy 'em."
In the interest of accuracy, I want to say that a big part of what I consider the civilized world would be located in Western Europe, and their oil is low sulfur from the source, and their coal is the same- they've had to worry about this every since the Black Forest turned tan and grey in the 70's... plus a lot of their electricty comes from nukes. Even China, the bull in the china shop here, is beginning to try to reduce emissons and clean things up. It's a big problem, and fixing whatever part is going to get fixed is a big deal.
Africa is another story, but then, they use about 1/100th the energy per person that we do, if that.

thats not unusual when you consider that they have to make a model changeover on short bed, longbed, standard cab, extended cab, four door, suburban, tahoe trucks.

same occured in 88 when they phazed out the old body style and took them three years to complete the changeover, if I rmember right the duall crew cabs were last.

only point I have to offer if that vehicle is titled as a 2007 vehcile, it has to meet the applicable standards for a vehicle carrying that model year.

Not really..... Its about the engine production.. The engine could have been manufactured in '06 as an '06 model engine, then inserted into an '07 truck.. Its a loophole..

Yes, that was the point of my post. They aren't necesarily having problems with the new emissions rules, they just can't build enough of the new style trucks to offer all configurations right off the bat.

For whatever it's worth, production of the 2007 (new style) SUVs began back in January and GM is just now getting all models & options on the showroom floors. I don't expect the pickups to take that long, but a delay of 1-2 months isn't out of the question.

no it aint. a manufacturer can go forward, but cant go backwards when it comes to certification.

the Manufactuers wish it were a loophole.

when you call it an 07, they treat the whole thing as an 07, not just the body.

when it comes to auto emission equipment, its dead serious stuff and piles of money get spent validating equipment to meet those EPA specs.

I work on city transit buses, we cant even repower an old bus without upgrading to the newer engine that is certified to cleaner emissions. cant put back in what we had, its gotta be cleaner.

some of the heavy duty manufacturers, like Cummins didn't have to comply as soon as others because they earned EPA credits in the past, but everybody has to pass the 07 tests for their particular application.
