Using a dump tandem axle trailer for hauling tractor?

When I built my 5 x 9 dump trailer I made the pivot using a 60/40 split... with 60% ahead of the pivot.

The rear does drop down nicely and it doesn't take near the strain to tip... the downside is I cannot reach a 50 degree tip unless I am dumping into a pit.

I didn't have time to break out the ruler, but took a quick picture with the bed raised a little bit. You can see the pivot is only slightly forward, but it's enough that the trailing edge of the dump does lower somewhat. I'll try to measure it when I get a chance.

One of my barn doors is slightly elevated, so I plan to use that if I have trouble loading something that needs a shallower approach angle.

Careful with that plan. If you load up with that geometrical advantage and haul that load somewhere to use, you might not be able to get it back in the trailer at the end of the day!

LOL...good point! I was actually going to mention that you need to be careful with that plan, for that very reason.

I'm going to threadjack a bit:

How do you like the new trailer so far? I ordered a LoadTrail TL14 and hope to have it home in a month or so.

I don't think I would want to tilt a dump bed any to facilitate loading a tractor. That smooth floor might make for some fun.

Anyway, my POS DSL connection is running at a snail's pace tonight so I cannot get the Loadtrail website up. Last time I was looking, Loadtrail had a dump with a hydraulic ramp/tail gate. Might be a bit heavy or spendy but for someone wanting to haul equipment on a dump, it may be a viable option.

Beyond that, plenty of dump trailers come with the ramps hanging on the side over the fenders. Speak with the maker about longer ramps, maybe made with aluminum to make them more user friendly.

Double post. Like I said, my DSL is giving me fits.

So far I'm very happy with it. I've only pulled it on the road for a short while, but it tracked nicely. Around my property it's been great and isn't too much to put behind my Massey, so that's working out nicely. I did manage to bend one of the barn door hinges (my fault entirely), but a torch, a flat metal plate and a sledge hammer fixed it up pretty quickly :)

I finally got around to putting the trailer on a flat surface and taking pics with the bed level and raised a bit....it made more of a difference than I expected it would.

Here's a reference picture of the tailgate area with the bed all the way down (sorry about the poor picture):

Here's a picture showing how much I raised the bed:

Here's the same tailgate area with the bed raised...a full 3" lower:
