Hi All!

I was told by my off-road-diesel dealer that, here in Alabama, if they catch you with traces of red dye in your tank, they look at your odometer and assess you the tax for every mile on the vehicle. They assume you always used red diesel.

Second offense they take the truck and sell it.

Wow. Some pretty strong opinions on this one.

I subscribe to doing the right thing, and have never run red-dye in my truck ... or my tractor for that matter! I also believe that doing the right thing is voting for responsible people, living within your means, believing in something bigger than yourself (different for everybody..except Narcissus), loving your wife & family, working hard, drinking good beer, being neighborly, and respecting people's right to live their life (the list could go on forever).

I also firmly believe that people who burn red-dye on the road are not the reason any of us pay large amounts of our hard earned $$ in taxes. They are a much easier target though aren't they....

Speeding? No, that doesn't affect my pocketbook if people speed.

Screw around with taxes, not pay your fair share, yup I've been called a lot worse than a jerk. I don't care. And people have learned the hard way not to mess with me and mine. We all have to take a stand. Some of us take that stand when there is a clear issue of right and wrong. Do wrong and I tend to get involved. Don't care if you like it or agree with it. But I sure don't condone anarchy where people flaunt the law, cheat and steal. I guess we have different standards.
Vel saidt, komrade.

I confess I have run red dyed fuel on the interstates, But it was bought from an onroad pump and all taxes were paid. Right after hurricane season last year, so my filters are red, and the dye might show up in trace amounts. and how can they tax me for every mile on my truck if I show reciepts for $200.00 OR $300.00 A MONTH worth of taxed road fuel? I pay all the taxes that they can prove and make me pay, there are lots of ways to step around taxes and I do what I can to pay as little as I have too, but I dont take chances with untaxed fuel. How do the the people that make homebrewed fuel pay their share of road taxes?

That is the problem with this federation. People even thinking of turning in somebody for some silly satutory offense. Its not like its a crime. The only crimes are robbery, rape, and trespass. Oh and another thing taxation is nothing but a euphenism for armed robbery. How can a "free" country support itself at the end of a gun?

I will make a minor clarification here. They only tax you for the miles YOU put on, not all the miles on the odometer. The have to assume all previous owners followed the law just like they assume you have always broken it.

Put me, or more importantly my family, in danger and I will not hesitate to call the cops or appropriate authorities. 6 weeks ago or so I was driving my wife (daughter in back seat) home from work in our pick up pulling a friends (empty) 20" (+ or -) trailer. Just south of the neighboring town there are 2 relatively narrow bridges about 3/4 a mile apart. As you may guess, the roadway in between is built up and their are gradual approaches on each end. We are moving right along at about 65 MPH (speed limit) at a safe following distance with one car right in front of us. As we are driving up on the bridge I notice a blur in my mirror and look out my window to see a Mustang Cobra come flying around me. He is next to me ON THE BRIDGE. We he jumped lanes he could not see oncoming traffic. I'm thinkin the dumb SOB is gonna cut me off, so I get off the pedalto make room. Heck no. He takes both of us. I was hot. HE can endanger himself all he wants, but his antics are NOT going to endanger my family. He was about 6 miles from my small hometown, so I called the non-emergency line to dispatch so my friend/cop on duty could call me. Unfortunately when we got to town we all got stuck behind someone doing 20 in a 30 so she couldn't do anything. I read the tag off to her and she alerted the next county, since we knew he would be headed through there. Some might think I am a jerk, but the truth is that had it just been me.. I wouldn't have cared so much (all guys were like this at some point in thier lives), but my wife and kid were in that pickup and had someone been coming onto that bridge from the other way I would have had nowhere to go.

How would any country, free or not, exist without taxation. I am certainly not fond of big government, but this or any other country cannot exist without the infrastructure supported by taxes. That infrastructure is not free. The problem is those spending the money think it is a bottomless barrel.
Oops! I just went political. :p

Joe1,
While discussing legal use of off road fuel and given your experience with government agencies, I have a question for you or anyone else that happens to know for sure. Can off road fuel be used in trucks that are used for agriculture purposes only, even if these trucks are driven to the farms? Example: Litter spreading trucks or spraying units. I don't own either but do know several that do.
