I see we have come full circle. I can just barely remember seeing recycled oil sold at service stations when i was younger. I see it's becoming popular again.. just without the associated money savings.. :)

I was talking about "Recycling" the other day with the old guy who works the local dump. Theirs always a big push by his Boss to get people in the general public to recycle, recylce, recycle but who getting the benefit here? I know recycling does help the enviroment but we all know that big money is being made by all those aluminum cans, plastics, and paper being dropped off throughout the year. The man at the dump also said the % of recycled material needs to go up and I said what good does it do for the everyday person? The yearly landfill fees do NOT drop or anything else for that matter. I beleive that recycling is only good for the ones making $$$ off it.

Hmm.... when I worked on container ships a few years back I was told that used motor oil was "recycled" as LFO (light fuel oil) and burned as fuel in the ships' diesel engines.

They're actually purifying old motor oil and reselling it for use in car engines? :confused2: I haven't seen this yet.

(And you gotta see the diesel engines on these ships. Inline five cylinder diesels with pistons taller than me and cylinders a man can stand inside of! :confused2:)

There's a finite amount of raw materials on the planet. Recycling helps us all in the long run.

yep.. seen em.. low rpm.. high torque. i hear it's quite common for them to burn their MANY gallons of used oil in their fuel.

Safety-Kleen is a major re-processor of all types of used oil. Industrial facilities pay them to pick up used hydraulic, gear, etc. as a hazardous waste. They filter/ re-process and sell it as #3 and #4 fuel oil.

Yep, real low rpm. Something like 100 revs per minute if I remember correctly. I just did a quick search for hp and torque specs, but the ships I was on have been bought by another company and renamed and I wasn't finding anything I recognized.

I thought they were kidding about the "recycled" oil when they first told me. This was the kind of place where they'd tack weld your toolbox shut if you called out sick.

They seem to suggest if you don't use their product, the dirty oil will wind up being dumped on the ground, or in the ocean. :confused2:

I don't know who other than environmental extremists, will fall for their marketing ploy, and use this stuff.

They should be honest in their advertising, and offer the product for a fair price, for those who want to save money.

If what I have seen on TBN is a sample of the country, Valvoline will not sell very much of their recycled oil.

I haven't seen recycled oil in many, many years, but in the late '50s, early '60s, in my Dad's service station we stocked Texas Star recycled (re-refined, I think they called it) motor oil. Some customers asked if we had any two bit motor oil (two bits is 25 cents for you younger readers:laughing:) and seemed a bit embarrassed by asking for it. We didn't mind at all since our profit was 12.5 cents on the 25 cent motor oil while we only made 11 cents on the 40 and 45 cent name brand oils.

I don't go back that far, but do remember the cardbaord carton oil quarts and remember re-refined oil.. was a shock to walk into walmart and see that product.. ;)

heck.. they should have went back to putting it in glass quart bottles or the cardboard jobs you had to stab the metal lids with a screwdriver and splash oil on your sunday shirt doing so.. :)

Of course we didn't have to stab the top of the can with a screwdriver in the service station, we had genuine spouts that penetrated the metal top at least 9 out of 10 times without collapsing the cardboard.

I've got one of the old bottles with a spout. Don't know what type of oil was sold in it though.

When I was in high school, (1960s) "re-refined" motor oil came in standard weights (20-30-40) It came in 2 gallon cans. Don't remember the price, but was good enough to run an old car or farm pickup.

As high school boys go, we had a reputation for getting exceptionally high millage out of used recapped tires also...........

Anything to save money so we had more to spend on girls and beer..

Yep saw it i think its called somethig green or so and is in a partly green jug! Advance has it on an oil change special either last month or this month. Crazy thing is that it was say 17.99 (just a made up price, i cant really remember) for the regular oil 5 qts and purolator filter and then the same price for the recycled oil. I dont care how good it is refined i will buy the virgin every time.

i hear ya. i like the concept of re-use.. but if they managed to do it at ANY price drop.. they would likely sell more.. just from a marketing perspective. heck.. even 50 cents cheaper they would make more sales on it.. etc.

There is big money in recycled oil. I have a friend who deals in oils and the company he works for picks it up all the time. I think they pay about $.75 or a little more per gallon. I change lots of oil, maybe 100 oil changes or more per year and he would not bother with me. I though maybe I could get a tank and store it for a year or so and they could come pick it up. While my 150 gallons or so of used oil to me seemed like a lot they want to pick up 1000's of gallons, not a few hundred. I just take it back to my favorite auto parts stores.

Re cycled motor oil is not like it was years ago.. back then it was filtered, centrifuged and new additives added.

Today it is re-cracked in a refinery, just as crude is, to produce what is escentially NEW oil.

The Department of Defense has a requirement that all oil they buy be at least 50% recycled. I have not seen oil related failures in the DOD vehicle fleets.

I have a case of the old quarts and a spout. All in fairly good shape. Think they're worth anything???

I didn't know about the DOD requirement, nor do I know about the process. But way back in the 50s and before, there was both detergent and non-detergent motor oils. The non-detergent oil worked OK in the old cars, but when hydraulic lifters were put in cars, they needed the detergent motor oil or the lifters would start sticking. In other words, certain additives. The Texas Star re-refined motor oil we sold was a non-detergent oil back then.

For example, Texaco branded oil was non-detergent while their Havoline oil was detergent. Amalie motor oil did a lot of advertising and I saw a few engines torn down when the mechanics said it was nothing except using that darned Amalie motor oil that ruined them. Now Amalie made a detergent oil, but most people didn't know that the regular Amalie was non-detergent.

I would expect that the re-refined oil has the proper additives in this day and age, but I haven't seen any to see what the API ratings are.
