srs; I see, I guess I need to "think inside the box". I didn't know Morton did that. Sounds like a specialized building? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm just not familiar with OSB being used in a pole building at all really, trying to grasp how & why anyone would?

For one thing you can't install vinyl siding over metal siding.

Another reason:
You want vinyl siding on your pole framed garage so it will blend in with your vinyl sided house and you don't want the garage to blend in with the barn by using metal siding.

Re: vinyl siding for a pole building

A few areas where metal might be better would be if you had a small welding or wash down area. Thanks.

I'm thinking of putting up a curtain like they use in hospitals to pull around a bed
for privacy to use as a car wash bay in my garage.
Anyone ever done that?

'Specialized' here would be a pole building with vinyl.... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Most sheds around here are not insulated or finished inside at all. Those that are heated, are probably 80% metal inside. Fire codes & insurance comanies practically demand it. I believe sheetrock would be another option that meets code. And some few just don't meet code.... Having a welder & grinder & storing fuel cans is just normal in a shed here, so code requires the fire protection.

Anything around here with vinyl outside is going to be stick built, not a pole structure. I guess that is why this whole thread seems so off to me - combining building sub-systems that don't work well with each other. Pole buildings have always worked best with exterior coverings that run vertically around here, and stick built works best with horizontal coverings. Doing it otherwise uses money that could have been spent on a bigger shed - and we all could use bigger sheds! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: vinyl siding for a pole building

What you don't understand is that a lot of times a siding is a owners preference. Not everyong likes metal walls for some reason or the other and some people like vinyl because they can match their house with it. There is nothing wrong with using vinyl on a pole barn if it is done correctly and while it may not be common in your area it might be in others.

Undoubtely, I could use a bigger shed. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif But vinyl costing more - Not necessarily true! When I built my barn, although I had no initial intention of insulating it or applying boards on the inside, I did want it to somewhat match my house and also at least have a little more insulating capability than steel provides. As I looked into it further, I found that siding it was only about $300 more (for a $8,000) barn to go with vinyl over OSB vs metal. Now the price of metal has gone up significantly, but so has the price of OSB, but not vinyl. My guess is, the prices are still very close.

Re: vinyl siding for a pole building

Our pole barn is real close to the house and our decision for vinyl siding was to make things blend in a little nicer. It was purely a personal choice for us.

Hey PineRidge, on your 12-5-04 post you attached a photo showing the interior of your building. Do you by any chance have a finished photo of the interior? I'm curious as to what covering you used on the inside. Did you also insulate the interior? Thank you in advance. Stanley
