Beautiful pics Steeldust... Glad to see your barn is holding up well! I really enjoyed your thread on this project and admire your work.

Thanks for the great pictures. The snow looks amazing. Cold and miserable, but still amazing!!

How about some overall pics of your entire barn in the snow? I really think that it has such classic lines to it that seeing all of it in the snow would be very impressive.

I took a few during the fist day of the recent snowfall, this is the only one that really turned out decent.

I took this picture this afternoon, with just a little bit of warm up, the barn has nearly shed all of it's snow load. I wish I was around to see it all come off, but glad I wasn't standing under it. :D

I also recognized a small design flaw. One that those in areas that see lots of snow probably realize all too well. If you just have to have a set of swing out doors on your barn, as I did, put them on the gable end, not on the eave end, where the entire snow content of the roof is going to drop. I spent a good 20 minutes shoveling out enough to get my doors open in order to get the tractor out.

That would look great parked beside my house , great work :). You may need to think about adapting a sliding track above the swing out doors to convert them to sliders so they can be easily opened when snowing .

add snow stops to the roof above the door it'll save your back for sure.

Beautiful pictures.

Since I don't live in an area where snow is an issue, or have ever lived in such an area, I would never have thought about that door swinging out either. In fact, when you said you had a problem, my first thought was if the snow coming off of the first roof was causing some damage when it hit the second roof.

Truly a building to be proud of.

I just went through the entire posting and the barn looks fantastic. Teenage kids go a long way to making these kinds of projects go quicker.

What do "snow stops" look like?

Very nice barn!!

I think snow stops are about 6"- or more long (like angle iron- staggered) that attach to the roof, and slow down movement of large amounts of snow from sliding off and causing injury to people or property below the doorway. I see quite a few of them on restruants and commercial buildings.

I'm going to have to look into Snow-Stops... My Thurston County home is near you SteelDust and I just got word a large slab of snow slid off the second story roof onto the wood deck below...

To early to tell if any damaged occurred... thankfully no one was out on the deck or it would have been very serious.

From all accounts the current amount of snow may be a record for accumulation at one time...

Great Barn... I would make it my Christmas Card next year if it was mine.

The year I was living in Austria I had the chance to learn a little about Alpine Construction... The traditional Alpine Chalet has a low slope roof supported by massive wood beams is designed to hold snow and shed water... also, homes are situated to maximize winter sun and entrances avoid the "Weather Side"... things that never would have occurred to me growing up in California.

The low slope roof minimizes the risk of snow sliding off the roof and a layer of show is seen as extra insulation against the elements.
