for any woody or heavy vines, etc, a hedge trimmer is great. i have a stihl hedger that is designed for thicker stuff.
i now have a few ideas on how to handle the stems binding up the trimmer head on the FS250, regards

I use my AP pole Hedge Trimmer and Saw a lot more than I would have imagined

The hedge trimmer at an angle made short work cutting back blackberries.

I also like wearing gauntlet style leather welding gloves!

Many commercial landscaping crews here.... PNW... use gas powered hedgers for heavy Black Berries, along chain link fences.

sthil has 2 pro hedge trimmer models, one for conventional hedge finish trimming, & one designed more for your woody application. both of mine make quik work on my applications
as expected, the hedge cutters don't like chain or barb fence, but is usually less of a hassle to avoid than chain saws & rocks

I use a Stihl hedge trimmer attachment, which I believe they call a power scythe. It's great on tall weeds or THIN grass, but in regular tall grass or bunched vegetation it's a struggle to use it.
The round Stihl metal blade is ok, but adds to my trimming time over string.

I get the cheapo 3-pack for $14.99 welding gloves from Harbor Freight for handling blackberry, hedge and locust branches. No sense tearing up good welding gloves for yard work, I figure.

Technique can help minimize grass wrapping on the blade.

In high grass, someone mentioned cutting from the top down, which helps cut long grass into pieces as you work towards the ground rather than trying to start cutting at the base of the long grass.

One additional adjustment when clearing areas of grass is rather than holding the head parallel with the ground as you swing it side to side, try to cant the head about 30 degrees as you swing it. It's pretty easy with the bicycle handlebars on larger weedeaters to hold your left handle up and right handle down as you swing side to side.

Changing the angle of attack as you cut results in long grass being cut into smaller pieces before it gets a chance to wrap-up around the head. It's not 100% fool proof, but it goes a long way towards minimizing grass wrap!

Forget what I said about renting goats. Wife checked into it around here. $50/goat/day. I think she said 12 goats could clear 1/2 acre a day. It's cheaper for me to pay a guy with a Forestry mulcher to clear the underbrush.
