I make it easy on myself, especially on vehicles under warranty. I use what they recommend. Ford-Motorcraft, GM-AC Delco. That way, if one fails, I can say it was what was recommended in the manual. Try to cover my butt.

yep.. that's a no brainer. for an in warranty vehicle.. use rec.

I know you don't have to if the repalcement meets specs.. but it just makes it easier IF there is aproblem.. :)

For a general filter it's hard to beat WIX but there are other good ones out there. Just a little research will show you which are well made and which are not.
Things like how many folds in the paper element (filter area) and size and number of holes in the center tube (flow area) are things that make a difference. In the early 90's I decided to cut apart a Fram equivalent filter to the Nissan Sentra filter and compare them. There was no comparison. Much less filtering, small and few flow holes and the spring that holds the element to the valve was a piece of stamped lightweight spring steel where the Nissan filter had a heavy coil spring. I've seen that Fram has added better made filters over the years but I wouldn't buy one just on the fact that they were making the lowest quality thing out there for so long. They must be making them better since the factory Honda/Acura oil filter is made by Honeywell which owns Fram.

early 90's? I wouldn't even pop popcorn based on info that was nearly 20ys old...

not to mention there are at least 2 lines of their filters now.

As I said...
Fram is making better filters these days. But there are enough other choices out there that I don't have to support a brand that made and sold junk for so long.

Napa (wix?) now makes a Platinum series in addition to the std Gold. apparently longer lasting filter material between longer interval changes w/synthetic. any feedback on this new series? worth it?

that logic could be applied to almost any manufacturer or supplier at some point along it's life.

never re-visiting a concept due to a bad period in history is a tad limiting.

that said.. it's fine to simply have other choices, and choose one of those for other reasons.

I used to not like the tast of broc/cauliflower/spinache. fortunately I tried them again some time in life and found out they were now palitable to me.... glad I'm not missing out on them due to a previous bad experience....
