I had back surgery in January, and at ~260 lbs I decided I needed to lose some weight. So about two weeks after the surgery, I started walking, with a walker, a few hundred feet a day. after a few days I ditched the walker and started walking farther, a little at a time. Now, I'm up to a little over a mile a day, which doesn't sound like much, but due to the back problem I lost the use of my right calf muscle, so walking is a lot more difficult that it was before. I also cut my food intake at least in half, (I love to eat), and only have a light breakfast and a regular meal in the evening, no lunch, but maybe a granola bar if my stomach gets to growling too much. Last October the doctor's scale said I weighed 268 lbs, yesterday at the doctor's office for my bi-annual checkup, I was down to 238 lbs. I only take half the blood pressure meds I had been taking, and my BP is down to normal ~120/70 at rest. I'm going to keep trying to lose more weight, my goal is 190-200 lbs, less than I've weighed in about 50 years, and hopefully I can get off the BP meds all together.

I've got 240 bales on my trailer that needs to be stacked in the barn. If anybody is looking for some good exercise, come on over. It takes me a little more time to git-r-done at my age. I guess the important thing is I'm still doing it and I don't have to pay to go to a gym.

The prawn cake is high in protein but I also use protein powder

I put a scoop of this protein powder in my post workout smoothie with frozen banana, spinach, oat milk, almond butter and cinnamon.

Diet is NOT exercise! And one can NOT Replace one with the other.

Apply both, but don't fall for false claims.,

Basicly, Diet boasting is vertue signaling with no benefit to anyone.

Exercise gyms STINK! Get out there!

Jees'em

I don't take meds, but I have all the same expressions as you but tilt the scales at 180 and want to get back to 165.

Everyone needs goals!

I agree that everyone should do both but doing neither is worse than doing one. I know, this is an exercise thread :)

Virtue signaling sure has a negative connotation in my mind. I like to hear what others eat to try to lose weight and if I can get an idea from someone's boasting it will benefit ME!

Also, can I ask, if one were to try to lower their "bad" cholesterol, which works better, exercise or diet if you're only able to do one?

I guess I'm getting off topic, but not as far off topic as most threads get.

There is work exercise and then exercise for the sake of working out. They both have there places. Another unfortunate thing with our culture and I’m guilty of it, eating becomes a hobby. I’ve lost somewhere between 10 and 15 pounds in the last 3 months. Keeping it off has been my problem.

I‘m up to 3700 miles on my e bike. I’ve had it about 20 months.

I did a short triathlon last weekend with my 2 boys 13 and 10. 300m swim, 10km bike, and 3km run. Each of us is fastest at one event so it was fun to see who won out and it was our first triathlon. Turned out that a 2 minute advantage after the swim is hard to catch! And I may not be fastest on the bikes anymore...
Good fun though and has got me motivated to learn to swim at a decent pace.

Just getting up and doing something is the hard part, AND not overdoing it. Just doing a little bit extra each day or two is enough. Or if one over does it, taking a break, or easing off a bit helps. Starting and doing a little bit is sooooo much better than doing nothing or doing too much that one gets hurt and stops doing.

This weekend I did not eat my "breakfast" because I simply was not hungry. Just had some coffee and ate dinner. I, and I expect many others, have been taught to eat three meals a day but that really is simply too much. Even if eating "healthy" I don't need to eat more than once or twice a day.

You are much, much better off skipping some later meal in the day. When people skip breakest, your body thinks "OK, no food available today" and slows down ones metabolism. This is why folks who skip it, tend to be overweight.

There's only one thing and she won't let me do it more than a couple of times per week.:ROFLMAO:
So she's cut back your TBN posting to only a couple times a week?

As we age overdoing it can be as simple as doing what we had been doing for decades.
I'm in no great shape, but until last winter had been walking a mile or more a day.
Then my left knee "blew out" (MCL Tear). Walking up the stairs, collapsed and crawled to the landing. Went to the doc and let me tell you the positioning for xrays was as painful as the blow out.
After a few weeks I could get around with a crutch/cane. But I ended up straining my right knee, and THAT blew out (another MCL Tear).
Gradually rehabilitated and now tend to wear at least one "Knee Brace" almost all the time. I'll put it on my left leg (which needs it the most) for general around the compound activity. My house is about 100 yards from my Man Caves. And my routines usually involve about 10 or more trips daily.
If I'm not feeling the pain very much I'll roll it down, but keep it on. Several times I've twisted and felt it starting to go, but usually sitting down and pulling it back up I can limp around.
All through my first 70+ years I had never experienced a MCL Tear and it certainly got my attention.

I have heard that but my eating times are allowing me to loose weight and maintain. I loose weight if I don't overeat on the weekend, or not as likely, during the week. The last week or two has been bad because a new grocery store opened up and it has a much better selection of food that tempted me. Back to normal eating this week so the weight loss is continuing. (y)

I don't usually skip breakfast but breakfast is not in the morning due to my schedule and intermittent fasting. Having said that, my schedule is not like others, so I am eating breakfast at breakfast body time vs what other people consider lunch.

Weight loss works for me by skipping meals, breakfast or other wise. I have learned to not eat if one is not hungry. If I am hungry it is time to eat, unless it is in fasting time frame, which really does not happen.

Best thing I did health wise was
  • Walking exercise tracked by Fitbit/pedometer.
  • Eating healthier
  • Intermittent fasting which I think is healthy to do besides being used to reduce calorie intake
  • Low/No Alcohol beer.
    • I would cycle with weight loss and gain and one big issue is beer. I drink quite a bit of water but I want beer with a good meal. The extra calories in beer add up, like it does with soda and fruit juices. I would drink flavored water instead of beer, loose weight but then not be able to get the water, go back to beer, gain weight and repeat. Finding that low/no alcohol beer, which has lower calories, has helped stop the water/beer cycle.

I'm not an exercise/weight loss guru. But a guy I worked with who was trying to lose weight and eventually do a triathalon told me the most effective program is to do your cardio in the morning, before breakfast. This is due to your body fasting overnight, it has no choice but to use the fat stores. Then eat a good breakfast. Then do your weight training later in the day after your body has been fueling up. I guess it makes sense.

He transformed from being very overweight to doing triathlon's in short order.

I had enough physical fitness in the Marine Corps. Crohns keeps my weight down and work and the property gives me enough physical activity.

If I really want a work out, I'll watch my daughter play hockey, I'm exhausted just watching her. She's on the treadmill now ( with skates). I'll probably have to get a beer by the time she's done so I can breath...lol

She's 12 do she can't drink but she was doing 9.2mph on a roughly 10 percent grade. Did 4 reps of 30 second sprints. I'm worn out from watching her. Wish I had her energy.

Used to be able to do a 15.30 3 mile run. Now its whatever the vehicle I'm in can go...

Exercising every day for 5 minutes does not cut it. Your heart and your whole cardiovascular system will suffer.
Wife and I like to walk at a brisk enough pace where it's a bit hard to get our words out between breaths. Otherwise, it's a stroll. ;)

I walk the pooch 3 miles a day.

Here's today's exercise. Running a chain saw, and throwing the smaller lighter stuff on the burn pile.

Bounced between a chain saw and a trackhoe today.

Think I got plenty of exercise.
