I woke up this morning to find THIS!

What in God's name could have caused it ?

This is SO obvious. You had problems sleeping last night. You tossed, and turned. Got up to wee, back to bed, tossed and turned. You could not answer the one basic question that filled your tormented fitful sleep. Subconsciously, you knew the answer. But, Good Jamie would not let you, he tried to keep you from falling into that deep REM sleep, knowing if your reached that deep sleep, he was powerless over Bad Jamie.

Try as he might, Good Jamie, couldn't keep the brain waves active....dam Bad Jamie and that glass of warm goat milk after the midnight pee. That warm goats milk makes me......slee....py

Upon waking, Good Jamie knew, without even looking, that Bad Jamie had won the battle. He knew it - felt it, but had been powerless to stop it. He knew that TBN would have another thread to read that morning, and he knew how it happened. DAM YOU BAD JAMIE!!

Re: What the **** has happened to my window!?

It being wood and not shut in the frame, could lead to sagging over time that MAY cause the glass to undergo stress. It looks quite heavy but not sure if it is a solid door or flush door (hollow core) I know what you mean about the roughly painted surface, not sure what it is called....frosted, perhaps.

And if it isn't binding, why isn't it closed in the picture?

Yes, frosted, that's it.

What did you mean by binding ? I must have misunderstood.

Re: What the **** has happened to my window!?

Years ago, driving a VW beetle, along the Fla highway near Panama City on a very hot day we suddenly had a cold offshore gust hit us.
The driver's side vent window simply exploded raining glass crystals all over the place.
The widow angle was just right to absorb all the sun's heat and might as well had a nick to start the process.
So it can happen!

On a new car (like 60 miles and 5 hrs old) on closing the driver's door the entire rear window exploded raining crystals everywhere. A pressure point was claimed to be the culprit along with heat/air conditioning. I had been driving north with noontime direct rear sun heating the window. Boom! Kinda nerve shattering to say the least.

I'll never be able to shut the car door again without expecting to hear shattering glass

Binding is when a door is not square or the frame is bowed and so it sticks which can be an indication of a sagging door that may put stress on a corner of the glass inserts. Glass has zero resistance to bending or twisting or edge compression. If a door sticks badly enough just trying to open or close it can twist the door enough it will break glass.

Re: What the **** has happened to my window!?

 Luckily I had a lamp to hand so I managed to whack the baddie on the head and survived. Phew!

But now I think he's gone and he's actually hiding behind the shower curtain ready to attack me when I go to the toilet...

That is just where you THINK he is hiding.....

:D:D:D

Pebble from a lawn mower/edger will do it. Don't ask how I know. The break can start very small, and then boom, the pane of glass shatters.

Bird strikes as other people have mentioned. We have big windows at work that are constantly shattering. Some of the broken windows are from bird strikes because I sometimes see the dead bird. Other times I am not sure why the windows break. I have wondered about thermal stress but I don't know for sure.

Later,
Dan
PS dont look in the closet and whatever you do do NOT look under the bed....
