I had heard that flails generally cut nicer regardless of the type of flails used and that they are just as destructive to small stumps, brush, etc.

I had not considered or heard the forward/reverse aspect to this topic.

Good stuff. Thanks Eric.

Gents,

I have a Woodmaxx FM78 flail mower. For those on the fence I can tell you it is awesome! A year ago we purchased 13 acres with have over grown with native trees. I hired a forestry mulcher to clear the big stuff. That left a bunch of wood that would destroy a finish mower and would not be picked up by my brush hog.

I purchased the Flail in February and put it to work. I can tell you it is awesome. The finished cut is set for 3/4 inch with hammers. Those hammers pulverize all limbs and mulching debris. The end result is an area ready for the ztr.

I can easily take 1 saplings and types of woody growth. The Woodmaxx has a slip clutch pto shaft with a sheer pin. The gear box drives a triple belt pully to turn the flail rotor. I can not think of a way I would bog this thing down.

So... check out Youtube for videos on Flails.8 believe they are the absolute best mower option for those who what large acreage to look like a finished lawn quickly. My 5220r powers through everything with this woodmaxx behind it.

I値l get some videos for everyone to see it in action.

What did I do today? I installed a canopy on my 5220r to keep my bald head out of the sun and to keep my seat cool. It is a smashing success and aside from the weight to lift the canopy, it took all of 30 minutes to install. My dealer charges me $505 out the door without install. If you are buying a new open cap, get a canopy.

I will try to post photos...

Hey Jesser. Have you used the flail mower in reverse and if so how does it cut in those instances? Thanks.

The flail has a large roller after the cutting drum. The manual says to not back up with the mower on the ground, doing so can damage the unit. I raise the implement and back up so I always mow going forward. This is not a mulcher designed to chop stumps, they make those for tractors, but the cutting teeth, carbide, are solid mounted to the drum. The hammers, cast steel, swing on a flail mower.

Last Tuesday - I traded in my 2015 Branson 3520H on a 2019 3520R. There was a major issue with my previous dealer, so I selected a new dealer and got rid of a dealer created problem... Put 6 hours in the seat since Tuesday, and could not be happier... and I wish I had bought an R the first time out... it makes a huge difference in the tractor.

Can you share the difference you experience between the hydro drive (H) and the gear drive (R)? I have a 5220R and thought I was missing out not getting the hydro. Thanks

The last few days I somewhat casually used my tractor to run some barbless wire on top of some field fence around our place, with the goal of excluding deer from our land.

I didn't feel like carrying an 80# spool of wire by hand, so I picked up an "fence unroller" from TSC which mentioned on its packaging that you can slide a 1/2" pipe through its handle and put it in your 3ph.
Results:
1) the 1/2" galv pipe I had didn't go through easily due to a seam on the inside of the unroller's handle
2) grinding out a groove on the pipe allowed it to go through; I welded a big washer on one end of the pipe and drilled a hole for a lynch pin on the other
3) it spooled out a bit of wire quite nicely until
4) not sure what happened but one of the hooks bent down and then broke off when I tried to bend it back
5) would not advise purchase, we'll see if they refund it

I ended up with this rig:

It's the same 1/2" galv pipe with washer on the end and lynch pin, through the center hole of the fence roll; there's a couple pieces of 2" PVC pipe which keep the spool centered away from the 3ph arms. This successfully ran out about 3000' of wire; I was quite happy with it.

Unfortunately one of the posts I put in for this new fence a couple weeks back had a change of fence direction on it that was bigger than I expected when planning - I thought it was going to be small but it ended up being an unbraced 20 degree bend, and the post got a tilt from the fence tension. Yesterday I dug a hole inside the bend to pour an anchor for a diagonal brace (thankfully the bend is outside the yard so a diagonal brace won't be generally in the way); today I used the tractor to gently pull the post straight... it's parked to hold it while the concrete that the diagonal brace (now attached to the previously leaning post) is in sets for a couple days...

Unfortunately the hole had to be dug in hard clay with rocks in it by hand as the space behind the tractor has a steep slope for 10' before there's an irrigation canal - no corkscrew action there, just lots of sweat on a 90 degree day.

Nice. Just a regular finish mower?

No mowing here until next spring. The only thing growing and green is the tar weed which I will want to cut down before it seeds. However mowing this time of year is considered bad practice because it you hit a rock...
