There is nothing wrong with "mobile home" tires or axles. Just like all other parts out there, there are several manufacturers for “mobile home” products. Current DOT reg’s require all mobile home running gear to be DOT certified. Older stuff may or may not be DOT cert. I have three trailer and a total of six axles that all cam from under mobile homes. I have never had a problem with any of them. Are there “mobile home” axle’s and tire’s out there that I would not use?? Sure. But the blanket statement insinuating that “mobile home” running gear is junk is not right.
Heck you can buy complete hub kits from Dexter Dexter Axle - Trailer Axles and Running Gear Components - Wheel-Drum Kit
The Mobile home parts that I would stay away from are any axle that has a welded on backing plate. All the newer one that I have dealt with have the standard 5 bolt 2x12 electric brake backing plate. And any tire that does not have a DOT stamp. For me if it meets those two requirements and is mechanically sound, I would run them within their limits no matter what they used to be under.
Oh and on a side note i have to admit that i think i provided wrong information in a previous post. i think i stated i had 7K axles with UMH hubs, well i pulled my hubs and mic'ed out the spindle and they mesure up to what the 6k axles are. So next time registration come around i will have to derate my trailers.
