I am very new to operating a plow. I have a 3 bottom plow. The first one keeps "Breaking away" I don't know what to do? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Is there some way that I can adjust it? The other two plow bottoms work really good. As soon as I put the plows into the dirt, however, the first plow pops and rotats back? How can I fix this? Thanks to anyone who can offer any help!

Welcome to the forum.

You didn't provide much information about the plow, or how you are using it. The mechanism that allows the plow to trip is either overloaded because of how the plow is adjusted, or it may need a new part. As you already know, it isn't operating normally.

Is this a plough with features that allow a share to trip up if it encounters an imovable object?

There may be a broken or weak trip spring on that bottom.

ok I'll ask the obvious question...has the shear pin been broken away above the trip? Either way, one way to check to see if the trip itself (really just a lug on the spine of the plow) is still good is to install a stronger shear bolt. That's what I'd do first, keeping in mind if you put too strong a shear pin in, you could do damage to the trip...or, you could simply weld up the trip, as I have on one of my older 3-bottom plows...the drawback there is - you better not have big roots in the field, otherwise, you may go for a ride..

If it is a trip plow.. there's an adjustable bolt on the top back side of the tripping latch.. the bolt adjusts the tension on the spring that holds the plow latch in place. I had one of the springs break on my two bottom.. the spring was $43.. but at least I found one.. my plow was made around 1964.

First see if your spring is broken.. if not.. tighten the bolt some.. try it out.. if it still trips.. tighten a little more. Too tight and you risk breaking the tips of the plow.

What brand of plow? John Deere plows had a bushing that came in 4 sizes that would change the resistance to tripping. (on saftey trip models.) As some mentioned, it MIGHT be a shear bolt model. Without some specifics, it'd be a guessing game.
