Nothing wrong with that.
If you have a power hog like a water heater, set it to run off-peak with a timer @ 7.7 cents

Are you on TOU ? If so, how much have your bills dropped ?

WH is natgas, I just have to spin the venting blower with AC. Some loads aren't a good idea to load-shed/defer.... for one, I like to have my furnace powered up 24x7, October through April.

Personally, I've been energy conscious and conserving, long before Green became a buzzword. That's not my problem with this game - it's about a broke province trying to scam taxpayers out of more money.

This is the same provincial govt that paid a corporation a billion (yes, B) $ to not build a Natgas fired electrical generating plant - they were buying votes in the postal code west of Toronto where the Bay Street crowd live.

My latest post here has these same clowns talking up a 4 or 5x differential being needed between the base rate and Peak - allegedly because we are not conserving enough. Pure nonsense - since most of the manufacturing in this province has been wiped out, we have more power than we know what to do with.

I may have been born at night, but it wasn't last night.....

I hear ya, but when you put it in perspective...electricity isn't that bad for all it does for you.

I don't know about Canada, but in the US: To compare: Look at your cable bill. There's so many pockets being lined, the taxes have to be printed on your bill in extra fine print to fit the page!
There is even a tax on a tax! payed by you!

I just think for all electricity does for you...and the convience it gives you, it's not that expensive. My electric bill is cheaper than my cable/internet bill.
It's less than most spend on gasoline a month.

Try living without it.
Try generating your own power for a month, with your own generator using gas/oil/diesel/propane/NG. Factor in maintenance costs and equipment depreciation. See what that costs ya.
You'll soon see it's actually not such a bad deal.

Up here, taxpayers paid for the entire electrical grid. All of it. Why are we getting hosed on what we already bought and paid for ? (Rhetorical question, I know the answer).

At least cable was built by private companies.

I do get your point. I don't have cable or satellite - I won't pay for it. Electricity is a bit tougher to do w/o though.

Bulk calculation - last bill was approx. 17.63 cents/kwh. Add 13% HST to that. Add 10% to that once these clowns stop their Clean Energy feel-good discount....

BTW..... 71.19 % of my useage on that last bill was Off-Peak. That's with 3 TOU categories - Off-Peak, Mid-Peak, and Peak.

It ain't about conservation..... that's why I get so irked about this TOU scam, it demeans real conservation activity.

Here in New Brunswick, power is currently at about .10pKwh, but not for much longer. NB power has a massive debt, like 5 billion dollars and soon must replace a power dam (the Mactaquac) because the concrete is faulty. Cost to be somewhere between 3 and 5 billion more. A lot of power infrastructure is old and overgrown with trees that fall on the lines, so a lot of rural power outages. NB power has a CANDU nuclear reactor that was just rebuilt at a huge cost overrun. It is a management nightmare. NB power still uses thermal generation for about 20% of peak demand and that too is a big liability. All in all, I expect NB power will have to nearly double the rate over the next 8 years.

There is cheap hydro power in Quebec..around 4 cents a KW..but they don't sell it to anyone for that rate. Newfoundland and Labrador are building a massive new hydro generating dam in Labrador which is supposed to be distributing cheap power to the Maritimes, but its not a reality yet. There is a lot of water power up this way, but our provincial governments jockey for advantage, beggar thy nieghbor like. One thing is for sure...electrical energy is a big upcoming issue here in NB. Politics and hydro make poor companions!

Roanoke Va area is paying around .12 1/2 kWh my electric is nearing my mortgage payment

That is exactly how I figure mine. Works out to ~$0.12/Kwh for about 1000-1500kwh usage. If usage is more, like 3000kwh, it is a little less. Drops down to around $0.11/kwh
What??? Our rate goes UP with usage.

Ontario Power Generation is/was making power for between roughly 3 and 5 cents a KW from hydro electric , coal and nuclear. Bruce Power's units 1 and 2 get a higher rate via contract to pay for the refurbishment.
The cleanest coal plants in North America were shutdown to purchase urban green weenie votes. The replacement NG turbines get 16.5 per KW running and a flat fee for standby. Wind turbines are paid 14.5 cents. The bulk of solar is paid 80.5 cents with some at 52 and 39 cents.
During off peak there is a surplus of power because the high energy rates and other factors has pushed industry from Ontario. The wind turbines , NG turbines and solar still run and get paid for being green. Nuclear units derate and blow 30% of the steam straight to the Condensers. Hydro electric will spill water over the dams bypassing the turbines. And OPG still has to pay Michigan, New York and Quebec to take surplus power.
So figure out who is making $ while my last power bill was 17.8 cents per KW and off peak was 77% of use.

That is exactly the way I figure my cost per KWH.

Our cost is 12-13 cents per KWH. Moving more towards 13 cents.

Dan

Not sure why I said 13 cents a KWH... :confused3:

We are paying 11-12 cents per KWH. I entered the power bill into the spreadsheet yesterday and looked at our average costs and usage for 2014. Cost is 11-12 cents per KWH. What was interesting is that we had a cooler summer in 2014 because our power usage/costs was less than previous years in spite of a the highest power bill we have ever had which was in 12/2014. The high 12/2014 power bill is ironic because it has been warmer than usual. :confused3::shocked::laughing: Normally, we would be running the wood stove but it just was not cold enough so we would run the heat pump once in the morning and maybe once in the evening. December is a high power bill month since we are on vacation and cooking more but using the heat pump more than usual drove up the bill to its highest level. Though the overall expense for the year was lower the previous years.

If you really want to figure it out, go to degreedays.net and figure you power bill per heating or cooling degree day. I did that when I had propane and it was very eye-opening. I haven't had time to sit down and figure it recently, now that I have a geothermal system. I think I need to give it a few months of operation, or at least get the power bill that covers the latest cold snap, before I go to that much trouble to figure out how it's working.

Thanks for that link, that's good info to have. I downloaded daily numbers for the last 3 yrs here. This year's heating season so far, starting 1 oct, is 13.6% less heat required than last year, 7.5% less than 2 yrs ago. Last years heating was 5.5% more than the year before.
