What size trailer??

There's hauling and then there is "Hauling". How often....How far...How hilly... How much extra not planned for. Your 5.4 will soon tell you if your load is too heavy for going or for stopping. my .02 cents

If it is only occasional towing and relatively flat, the 5.4 will do it. I towed 10k a few times with my 07 f150 (5.4, 3.55's IIRC). It didn't like hills much, but it did it.

I traded it for a chevy 2500 with a bigger engine and 4.10 rear end.

I have a 22' 12k equipment trailer with fold up ramps. Everything usually fits, but it isn't always easy (fel and a 7' bush hog takes some figuring...)

For you, a 20' 10k trailer should be enough. Slide in ramps will save you those few inches when you can't quite get the ramps folded up, but the fold up ramps sure are easy to use.

I would recommend a 10k trailer with a 20ft bed, brakes on both axles. The extra length will allow you to balance the tractor with an implement if it is ever needed. A longer trailer will pull better than a short trailer too.

Minimum trailer would be an 18ft 10k trailer this is maybe 150#s lighter than the 20ft trailer. The maximum size trailer I would consider would be a 20ft 12k trailer. Alot would depend on what you can find used in your locale.

I pull a New Holland 3930 w/loaded tires and FEL plus implement of the day, usually a box blade on a 20 ft double 7000# axles with a Toyota Tundra 5.7. No problems at all, just make sure your trailer tires are rated for your load.
According to this my 1992 Toyota PU should handle my Kubota BX23 TLB on a 16 or 18 foot trailer OK right?

Don't know about others experience but my 09 f150 with 5.4 does just fine towing 6500 lbs.

Thanks for all the replies, the truck is an '07 with 3.55 rear end I believe (FX4). It's rated less than the other ford models for hauling. I think 13,500 lbs. there are mountains to go over.... This would be to haul the tractor once or twice a month, about 400 miles round trip. New truck isn't an option since I just bought this one.

If I can find an 18 foot trailer/ 10,000 lb rating, that sounds like it might do the trick.

Also, I saw some trailers for sale with a Pintle hitch, is that desirable?

Thanks for the help

I would stick with a ball hitch for this size trailer imo.

Don't know your situation but you might consider renting a storage unit nearby if this will reduce the need for hauling. alot cheaper than towing 400 miles round trip frequently.

And people tell me my BX 23 is to much for a Toyota. :confused2:

What does a BX23 weigh? 2000 lbs?

My tractor alone is over 5000 lbs. add the FEL, loaded tires and rear implement I'd guess I'm pushing close to 8000 lbs. The Tundra can handle much more. I think it will pull more than you can safely stop so make sure you have brakes on both axles.

I only know what my Tundra will do. Have no idea about the Tacoma.
I suppose it depends on your suspension, gearing and engine.
