I'll give you my opinion for what it's worth. I think you need an 18' trailer, 10,000# rating (tandem 5,000# axles), with brakes on both axles.

Bird,

Do you think 18' is long enough? I have a comparable setup (NH TC33D w/ FEL and 5' Bush Hog) and a 20' trailer. When I load it the FEL bucket touches the front of the trailer and the wheel on the back of the Bush Hog is just a few inches shy of the back of the trailer. Seems to me that an 18' trailer could leave something hanging off the back if the FEL and rotary mower were attached.

It sounds like either 7,000# or 10,000# would work for you. Simply add the weight of the trailer and the weight of your load to see if you're within the rated load limit or not. I'm guessing you will be. Beyond that all you need to consider is whether or not you want the heavier trailer.

I'd definitely go with tandem axle braking. Get as many tie downs as you can stand. You'll never have too many. A winch mount on the front is handy if you need to take your non-running tractor in for service. It happens. One other thing to consider is whether you want to deal with ramps all the time or want a tilt bed. I went with a tilt bed and love it. Give yourself the option to add sides if you want. You may never need it but it'll be nice knowing you can if you want.

Chris, I think an 18' trailer will do, but of course I was talking about what I'd consider for a minimum. A 20' trailer would certainly be even better,

Another thing to consider is the tow vehicle. There are not a lot of vehicles that will tow 10,000 pounds. While the trailer and load my not weigh 10K, it will certainlly approach that weight. You will want to leave yourself some margin. Braking is especially important. And you'll want a class IV anti-sway hitch.

And, NO.... you can not borrow my Excursion /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif.

I've towed my 26' (22' flooor) 7,000# trailer loaded with my Deere 4200, FEL, BH & 6' finish mower with my Chevy Tahoe 4x4 with no problems. I've also loaded a full size ext. cab 4x4 and dollied (front wheels up, back wheels down) a regular cab full size 4x4 and it pulled just fine. If I was going to do that regularly, I'd probably use a 2500 Suburban 4x4. Excursions just don't have the leg room. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I pull mine with a 20 foot 12,000 lb trailer. It is MUCH better pulling than my old 7,000 lb trailer I used to pull my B2150 with. I have about a foot to spare with the FEL, L3010 and bushhog on it. If you want to carry extra implements I would go larger.

What size is the Bush Hog. I think my 3710 FEL and 6' rotory mower is about 23 feet total. It is hard to find a 20' much less over 20' that is a bumper pull. I am trying not to go to a goose neck because some times I would like use my wifes 3/4 ton suburban instead of the truck when I am bringing out some extra helpers.

MDSteve,

I bought a 20' Falcon Superduty Utility trailer with 5500 lb axles and 4 brakes. I came up with the same dimensions as you with the bush hog and FEL on. This should work fine with only the tail wheel hanging off. This size trailer is as large as I have seen in a bumper pull. But should be readly available. I got mine for under $2,600 with a toolbox on the tounge.

Only problem I have found so far is that you cannot fit a 7' RFM on it. Too wide!!!!! Still have to figure that one out!

Will post pictures tonight.

Hope this helps.

That Falcon sounds like it's not only a nice unit but well worth the money at only $2600. Am I correct in assuming the 20' is the bed length and not the overall? I notice trailer sellers seem to sell the overall length instead of the bed length (usually about a four foot difference).

Now that you have said that I don't know.

I will measure it tonight and let you know.

I did also get the 5' tounge on mine so I would have room for the tool box. It is a lot of trailer!!!!

I know that my "Twenty-six foot trailer" only has five and one-half 4' floor sections making up a 22' floor. To be fair, though, I notice that now the manufacturer advertises only on bed length and specifies it as such.

Gary in Indiana,

I measured the deck. It is 20' long. Here are some pics. Excuse the quality all I have is a cheap digital camera. Hope to get a better on soon.

Nice looking outfit! Is that a battery or what on the tongue next to the toolbox? Is yours a tilt bed trailer?

/ what tlr to purchase #17
That is the battery for the break-away brakes. In Texas all trailers over a certain weight have to have this in case the trailer gets seperated from the truck it locks the trailer brakes.

Haven't had to use it yet!!!!

The first thing to do is add up the weight of the tractor and implements that you will haul. When you do, remember that you may want to take more than one implement. Any time I take my tractor to my Dad's, I load the scraper to the front, while I have the rotary mower on the 3pt. Sometimes I throw in the post hole digger too. Figure you may have loaded tires too.

Now that you have the tractor figured out, figure out the other stuff, ie: tool box, extra fuel, chain saw, ice chest with lunch and beverage, tie downs, Lawn chair for taking break to eat and drink beverage...

I estimated this before for my Kubota B8200, but couldn't figure out how to pull up the archive, so I'll try again:
1590 lbs B8200
620 lbs Loader
300 lbs Scraper
365 lbs mower
100 lbs Post hole digger
-------------------------------
2975 lbs outfitted tractor

Other stuff:
100 lbs tool box
50 lbs 5 gal extra fuel @ 8.8lb/gal
25 lbs chain saw and 2-stroke fuel
35 lbs ice chest with lunch and beverage
50 lbs tie downs/chaind/binders
5 lbs Lawn chair for taking drink and drinking beverage
50 lbs shovel, fire extinguisher for mower, rock bar, pick ect
--------------------------------------
315 lbs misc "stuff"
--------------------------------------
3290 lbs tractor and "stuff"

So, my little compact outfitted for a days work away from home is over 3000 lbs! Man, you don't usually add all that stuff up! And, I was guesstimating a couple of those weights; it could be a little more than that...

Since the 3010 is a bigger tractor, you'll have significantly higher numbers than I did.

Note that these numbers can help decide what you pull with too; add the weight of the trailer, and you'll have a good idea how it fits in your tow vehicles GVWR an GCWR.

Now, you can go to the dealer and find out how long a tractor with mower will be. Mine hangs off the end of a 16' trailer when I have the mower on.

I am going to start looking for a trailer again soon. The best price up here in MD for that kind of trailer without the toolbox is 3500-4000. Hopefully I can come across a deal like you found.

Thanks for the pics.

Hello -

I'm currently looking at an 18' trailer that a local dealer in ND manufactures. The trailer is $1795, can be linux-coated (rubberized coating like you see on truck liners), and has all the features you'd want in a 7000lb trailer. The total price I'm looking at with the spring-loaded drop jack, linux-coating, etc., is around $2100.

It is manufactured by ABU Trailers - Dwight, ND. Specs include:
-Dovetail
-3x5x5/16" angle mainframe and hitch
-Tandem axle - 2 3500# axles
-electric brakes
-wrap around hitch
-2" A frame coupler
-Stored ramps
-2x8 plank floor (Fir)
-2x4 stake pockets
-Tear drop fenders
-82" between fenders
-6' removable front rail
-Breakaway kit
-battery - installed
-lights/reflectors
-safety chains
-new 215 /75R15 tires & white spoked wheels

They are showing these at the Minnesota State fair - knowledgeable members of the family have all said this was a great buy for the trailer. Any thoughts? Is this a good price?

(BTW, my JD4600 w/ FEL is 15' long. If I add my 72" deck, it will be over 18'. I don't think this will be a big problem as I don't expect to haul the mower anywhere and the other implement's I'm looking at are smaller (box blade, for example)

Thanks for the feedback!

-Bob
