What's your diesel engine oil?

I'm thinking of running Mobil 1, 0W-40 oil in my Deere. I'm presently running it in my Subaru Outback with good results. I live in the mountains of upstate NY and we get very cold weather here, well below zero although not in the last couple of years.

What I have found in my cars is that 10W-30 gives better fuel mileage but I like the 40 for hotter temps in the summer.

make sure you use a diesel rated oil; regular Mobil One is not for diesels.

Mobil 1 carries a CF rating, IIRC. I *think* (too lazy to call up the API.org website) it is for non-turbo diesels and higher sulfur fuels. Should be OK.

I run Texas Refinery's Moly Pro-Spec III 15W/40 in all my ag tractors and in my on road diesel trucks. I'll probably be buying a new medium duty truck later next year and will have to run Moly Pro-Spec IV 15W/40 in it because it will need a CJ-4 rated oil.

If your going to use Mobil I would suggest using their Delvac and not Mobil "1". The Delvac is their diesel line of oil.

I changed to Rotella 5w -40 late summer 2005. I live in the New York area and during the summer months I dont think it gives me the protection I need. It has been great for the winter, with starting being a lot easier. Even though I dont do the hours to make full use of the synthetic I was thinking of switching to a 10w -40 for the summer and then back to the 5 w 40 for the winter.

Good question. I figure the oils dino vs synthetics are all so good that why spend the money in the summer for syn when dino will do just as well??? I am not going for extended drain intervals (I use Mobil 1 in my cars).

I will get in trouble for saying this, but dino vs syn in terms of longevity for the engine simply does not apply in my situation. I am looking for improved flow in cold weather on the tractor with syn. If I get 200-300 hours a year on my tractor, that would be great. Since NH says to change the oil every 300 hours, I expect changing oil and filter twice a year, after about 200 hrs in summer on dino, and 100 hr in winter on syn.
