You have already heard me whine about how much I hate picking up those (censored) walnuts so here is my second least favorite fall task:

Removing, cleaning, greasing, and storing the 400 pound MMM for my tractor. One huge PIB especially the underside cleaning and scraping, but the one fall I didn't clean the underside the grass stuck underneath turned rock hard over the winter.

So, which regular fall project do you detest most of all?

None. Fall is one of my most favorite times of the year. I enjoy yard work, cool crisp air, putting up the pool and patio funiture, raking leaves, tilling the garden over for the winter, stocking the freezer, harvesting firewood for next year, all a big build up for winter, my favorite time of year.

All of them...especially mulching the tons of leaves from my Maple, Ash and Cottonwood trees. I hate Fall and Winter and live for those bluebird days when I can go outside, sit on the deck in the sun and just relax. Everything in the Fall and Winter is contrasted with the cruise we took to San Juan and the Virgin Islands one gloomy and dismal January...

They all suck. In Michigan, fall, winter and spring, we might not see the sun for a week at a time. Living in the Great Lake state means we get a lot of cloud cover.

I took care of my usual worst fall task this last summer. I had 2 large sycamore trees in my back yard. In the fall the leaves would fall off the trees for about 2 months. For those not familar with sycamore trees, the leaves are about the size of a dinner plate and the trees produced LOTS of leaves. The leaves would pile against the house, my shop, my storage building and against the neighbors fence. I have a leaf blower/vac that I'd use to collect the piles against the structures and then I have a mulcher kit for my JD riding mower. I had to mow at least once a week even when the grass wasn't growing. Between the dust from the leaves and the mold that they had on them, my sinus was usually stopped up for several days afterward. The problem finally came to a head last December when I had a wood burning stove installed in the house. Since the tree trunks were only about 15 feet from the house and had limbs over the house I was also concerned about a spark hitting the trees when the leaves were dead but still attached (like I said that could last 2 months sometimes). I had to get a tree service to come in with a lift truck so they could take the trees down a little at a time using the winch on the lift bucket to lower the cuttings down without damaging my house, shop or the electric power supply line. The back yard looks kinda empty now but I no longer have to deal with the leaves.

I hate trying to stuff everything in the barn! Tables, chairs, trilers and everything that sits out all summer that "needs" to be inside in the winter.

Fall is my favorite time of the year too. I love Spring when my gardens & all the wild growies start to sprout, and the new calves & foals in the fields. Love Winter when everything is covered in deep snow and the fire is roaring and I can get back to my indoor projects. Flippin' hate everything about Summer even here on the mountain where it isn't too awful.

To answer the question, I guess the only thing about Fall chores I dislike is winterizing the danged swamp coolers. Otherwise, it's all good!

For me there is no doubt --- I absolutely, positively hate to pick up the leaves. Just hate that chore. Love the trees --- hate the leaves.

Why pick them up....mulch them with a mower. If only I could do that with walnuts without killing the grass by cutting it too short.

I agree with you Moss, except...Winter is my least favorite time of year....I am real cold sensitive....Fall ,my favorite, then Summer, then Spring and then suffer through 3 mos. of actual winter....I cannot imagine how you Northerners or the Canadians handle 9 months of winter....Yikes...

Last winter was a bust! First time I have not been able to go ice fishing since I was a kid. Not much sledding and hardly and cross country skiing either. Just a lot of mud. I really like the cold, cold weather... say about 10F and colder.... the kind of cold when you go outside and the hair in your nose freezes instantly, then you know its 10F or colder.

Coldest it has ever been here is -22F. My father in law and I went ice fishing. Just sat on buckets in the middle of the lake. Caught some excellent perch! My sister from Tucson was visiting and was just about a popsicle. She never came out of the house and walked around with hot tea and two blankets. She said "Its COLD!". I replied with "But its a DRY cold!"

MY leaves I don't mind at all, it's the ones that blow over the road from my neighbor who has fifty huge trees that bug me. The wind here always blows to the east and because he never cleans his leaves up they blow all over my property....yesterday I vacuumed up two full 16 gallon shop vac tankfuls from the interior of my garage and the doorway faces north...if it faced west there would have been 10X that many.

Being surrounded by trees, I have a lot of leaves to clean up. That's a bit of a pain, but I knew it when I bought this place.
Fall and Winter are my favorite times of the year, even with the extra work.
However, I am getting older and I do notice the change in the weather more.

As far as the leaves, I reckon I'm going to breakdown and buy a blower this year.

I guess its time to work smarter with our tractors if fall making you whine! I too have a neighbors walnut tree dropping nuts all over a corner of my yard and on the road. What I do is use my FEL to push all nuts off the road back to edge of his property and let him clean it. He is mighty whappy to do that as he save those nuts. It makes me happy not to see dark stain on the road looking like roadkill. As for nuts on yard - I just curl bucket and float. drag it backwards before mowing and leave in pile.

As for jdgreene- if he gets that much walnuts -(sounds like his is worse problem then mine) perhaps its time for get a new toy? a front mount broom? :D oh no -- you are on your own to buy one too ..:p

Roy, I have used both powerful electric and gas blowers and found them to be of little use for leaf blowing and collecting. I use mine mainly just to remove small amounts from flowerbeds and the decks, etc. and unless the leaves are dry it's almost a waste of time. I still feel the best way to dispose of large amounts is to either use a mulching mower or block off the discharge chute of the deck.

I love fall. I suppose the only thing that I have to do more is gather dead branches that have fallen and take them to the burn pile. The leaves don't really bother me.
