Hi ! Gonna buy a tractor within the next couple of months,Kubota for sure. I have 5 acres, 1 1/2 acres to mow,flat ground. Also wanting to put in a 3/4 ac. food plot and will need a post hole auger and tiller attachment. Planning on doing some garden tilling for the locals here as well. Would a BX suit my needs or should I go for a B model ? Thanks for your time ! Tony

Both BX and B will fit the bill. The BX has a suspended MMM and B is floating design. tiller will work on either B or BX. post hole digger, you may need to buy the jr version for BX, where the B series can lift much higher and use standard size post hole digger. With B series, you have mid range gear where
BX doesnt. The lack of midrange wasn't a deal killer for me on the BX though, but for you with a larger property then me, it might.

On the mmm,I'm kind of a stickler on how the lawn looks,currently mow with a 54" Snapper,is there gonna be much difference in the mowing quality with the suspended vs. the floating deck ? Or should I just keep the Snapper and save myself some money and not get a mmm ? Also,bear with me,but could you please explain the midrange gear . Thanks for the reply !

The B series has a 3 range hydrostatic transmission with Low, Mid and High ranges whereas the BX has just Low and High. More ranges gives you more options for controlling ground speed and pulling power. With the HST you have infinite speed adjustments within each range.

If grass appearance is high on your priority list, the BX would be better as it is lighter on the lawn and provides a good quality cut, though many like the B series cut as well. But, if you can keep a dedicated mowing machine, I'd recommend it. It's very nice to keep your SCUT/CUT tractor set up for loader and 3 point hitch work and not have to convert it to mowing and back once or more per week.

It is almost a toss up, we looked at both and really liked the B2920, but bought the BX due to its slightly smaller stature to get in more places. We have used it ti till with a Land Pride RTR0550. We also use a 48" Land Pride rotary cutter as well as a 60" back blade and 49" box blade. We have no regrets on not getting a B Series, but we have not used a post hole auger, we have one we use on another tractor.

Incidentally, the Bxx20 Series also has a suspended MMM deck, the Bxx30 Series has the floating MMM deck.

Slightly off topic, I'd buy a post pounder before I'd buy a post hole digger. I have a PHD, big pain in the tailpipe, always clearing out rocks, breaking shearpins. Neighbor bought a pounder with his tractor, I use it and love it. Puts in a 6" post in about 30 seconds, can also drive steel t posts with it if you're doing fencing.

For mowing I reverted to doing my mowing with the ZTR that I had, my B just doesn't compare and is a pain going around all the trees. Also if it's wet you'll leave tire tracks. I use the B to mow 5 acre pasture with hog, use the ZTR to do the 1ac around house and the fenceline in pasture- makes it easy to stick the cutting deck under the bottom electric wire and mow the whole fenceline, only need roundup on the posts.

Every year I do some project that makes me wish I had the backhoe on the BX. It's kind of expensive putting a hoe on a B, hard for me to justify cost. I have a few large things to do that make the B handier, like loading manure and spreading it, spreading woodchips and limestone. In hindsight I'm not sure which I'd buy if I had it to do over. You might buy used, then if you change your mind you could sell without much loss and move up (or down).

I have 8 1/4 acres and had a L2950 w/FEL. Used a 5 Ft bush hog with it also. We had a BX 1500 w/54" MMM for my wife. Both were good machines and worked well with our property. I traded them both last summer. I got a used L3400 w/FEL and back hoe and got the little woman a new BX1860 w/54" MMM, very happy with both machines. Still use the bush hog with the L3400 also. We have a lot of woods to work with and remove trees. We also till a garden with the BX using a reverse tine tiller. The HP ratings have been sufficient for us. Good luck.

I've owned both. There is really only two things of real note. Oh sure, two speed vs three speed, shrug. Not a biggie. The dash gauges on the B are far superior to the BX, but again, not life or death. Both use 1/4" 3 pt valving, while the B works better, again, not a biggie, imho. The list goes on. But here are two genuine differences and you'll have to decide for yourself.

The BX has a few things that are a fact of it's diminutive stature. Ground clearance is about half the B, if that matters to you. On most things, it matters not, but where ground clearance is required, there's no making the BX taller.

The 3 pt width and height is also limiting. Kubota doesn't call it "limited Cat 1" like Deere does, but it is. Again, can't make the BX wider or taller. Some implements need more ground clearance. The good news is that XB or properly sized versions of most implements are sold everywhere. They make life easier in lots of ways.

Finally, the B does not have the plastic trans cooling fan, but the BX does. Hopefully, Kubota will follow Deere's new 1000 series lead and get rid of that gosh awful thing on the next generation of BX.

Lest you think I'm ragging on the BX, not so!! Sweetest bugger ever!! Just have you eyes wide open. The series are different for a reason.

I just went through a similar decision with a similar lot size. Price wise things were relatively close. I chose the b2920 because its ground clearance and larger stature. I was worried about 3 pt implement compatibility too because i like to rent and those are often sized for bigger tractors. I did like the sound of the b too, it doesnt have much of a hst whine. Both are good machines, but if there is no size limit id go bigger because you can do more. I did keep my mowing machine, the b does a fine job but taking off the implements and bh just seems like a pain.

I had a B series machine a few years back and while the MMM was good, it became a pain to take on and off for loader or backhoe work. Sure you can leave it on with the front loader but you have no ground clearance. I ended up getting a commercial mower and using it as it provided a far better cut and then the tractor could always be left setup for tractor work.

I do not know about a finish mower, but a rotary mower wants around 5 PT HP per foot of mower; ie a 5' rotary mower wants 25 PTO HP, and more is nicer... Required HP for the implements of your choice may be a deciding factor on the final size of the tractor...

If you are lawn mowing, might consider turf tires. I switched to R4 on my old B8200; even in 2wd, it was easy to leave marks in damp grass. Remember you will be jumping from a lawn mower of what, maybe 300lbs to a 1500lbs+ tractor...

I think you have rec'd about all the info you can between the B and BX and the whys. I have had several B's and several BXs and even an L and currently have a B and a BX. As BP pointed out very well the differences between the B and BX. Mostly ground clearance.
If your keeping your lawn mower and plan on keeping it then you may want to go to a machine that "feels" more like a tractor. The B series "feels" more like a tractor than a riding mower.
The BX can do about everything the B can do (ground clearance higher on B) but it will "feel" more like a big riding mower that is on steroids, major steroids. It's biggest limit is traction and lower ground clearance but the ground clearance usually isn't an issue on flat ground.
Now get your butt on them and see which one makes you grin. Not much difference in money or work ability.

If you are gonna do a garden for yourself or other folks definitely go for the most ground clearance. I put in a garden for a lady recently where my B7510 strained with a 48" inch tiller because of the drought here in Texas. That was before I bought the B3200. Seems to me the 2920 would be a sweet machine for you. Don't forget "bedders" to make raised beds in the gardens.
