Why is cost per HP so high?

When's the last time you went 75 mph from New York to Disneyland, pulling a travel trailer, with your CUT???? If trucks only went 18mph, at WOT, then they would only need 40 hp.

Ask your self this... Why are trucks so expensive if they can only pull a trailer, or haul stuff in the back. A tractor can dig, smooth ground, rototill, plow, disc, mow, lift bales of hay, run augers and elevators, cultivate, bale, and pull a trailer plus much more. Sounds to me like the truck buyer is getting shafted by spending all that money on something that does so little.

I hate to upset the apple cart..but uhhhhhh, lookie here.. Dangit, I sold my CJ3B back in 99.

There once was a time when tractors were rated on many plow bottoms they could pull and how wide a thrashing machine they could turn.:)

If the internet was around in those days, there'd still have been an arguement over how deep were you plowing, how big were those plow bottoms, and what was running through that thrashing machine. ;)

I have a collection of old sales literature on farm equipment. Most would state how many plow bottoms and at what speed. In the brochures from the 30's and 40's, it was fairly accurate. By the 50's and 60's, most manufacturers were starting to "extend" the ratings a bit.

Yep.. or at least fudge on the environment. I've got some vintage ford NAA literature that shows a NAA pulling a 3 bottom plow. My guess is it must have been in sand...

I like the 134ci gas engine.. however.. i think it really needed the 172ci gas or diesel.. or 144 / 192 ci diesel to make an effective 3 plow machine..

You just know it has to be tall tough oat bundles hitting that feeder from both sides.

We had a neighbour who ploughed with an old army jeep. Two bottoms if I recall.

Love the Jeep add. I'm old enough to remember the surplus Jeep adds in magazines, but never saw any being used. I always wanted one when I was a kid, the one with a trencher. Anyway do you guys remember many being used?

Funny part is, I don't think that Jeep had much more hp than a tractor.

A shot of nitrous would fix that quick enough! :D

I am old enough and in the Army Guard that I got to drive the 1/4 ton for a few years until the HUMMV replaced them. Tough little vehicle, just liked to roll over too easy.

Power:

b. the time rate of doing work.

Torque:

2. Machinery. the measured ability of a rotating element, as of a gear or shaft, to overcome turning resistance.

Power = torque x RPM (with some conversion factors)

I seem to remember hearing that this tractor pulled a 40 bottom plow. Anybody been to the house on the rock? The second picture is historic in Kansas.

I have seen the same picture and may have posted it a few years ago. Pretty awesome when you look at it.

I'm wondering how many 1/4 sections it will take to turn around. :)
