I don't know how to improve this forum.
I do use the like button on some other forums, I find it interesting on those at times how it gets used.
I will also agree that it is just a few that get carried away, but; I will also say that quite often determining who is getting carried away depends a lot on which side of the equation you are on.
To me that is what makes moderating a thread so difficult.
Some of the posts on here just have to be ignored and at times that can be quite difficult.

And 3 of them have posted on this thread without adding to the discussion or presenting suggestions.

I assume you are including yourself in that count?

As mentioned in an earlier post in this thread, I am not innocent of these transgressions, but I get real tired of these pots calling the kettle black all the time.

I try really hard to be good, but sometimes I dont think God gave me enough strength and will power to overcome them

Some version of "three strikes and you're out" will quickly eliminate or reform the nuisance posters. It would improve the forum if we can refer to current affairs without triggering an immediate descent into personal insults and tribalism. In a short time that behavior would disappear, one way or the other.

^^ Simply upholding the posted rules and eliminating ALL political and religious references, no matter how subtle would go a long ways. And yes, that would/should/could include seeking or giving 'prayers' in health situations. That word could/would/should easily be substituted with 'wishes', 'goodwill' or any number of other words.

Indeed it would work, but what would control those strikes? The mods?

The mods do a great job with their limited tool kit. This would add a tool. Maybe the last stage - banning - would be discussed with the owner first.

I notice that sites that have a like or upvote, often do not have dislike or downvote simply because of the potential for abuse. The Cliques can gang up on someone they don't agree with. Even on Reddit, it's only on the thread, not the poster and it doesn't seem to do much of anything.

I can see the mini-ex guys downvoting the backhoe guys, the buy guys downvoting the rent guys and the ZTR guys downvoting the rider mower guys for example. Or the other way around. And if you don't go green or orange, you shouldn't be allowed to post here, right?

subtle - in of itself is difficult to analyze and describe. That's a huge slippery slope.

How about just refraining from the favorite insult word list when posting to members?

I realize some people also have a history list (LOL), but the truth is this is the internet age, it's over and done in milli-seconds. SO....deal with the post, not the poster come to mind.

I found this site when I was looking for information about tractors! I enjoy the tractor related topics and I "filter" out the non tractor topics! There are plenty of other sites that deal with politics, religion, movies and guns and they don't talk about tractors so I don't visit them! Having written this now I see a perfect way to keep the topics related to tractors! Just make sure that you use the word tractor at least 7 times in each post.

I cant really offer any suggestions for improvement, but I am in the camp of just ignoring.

Which is why I honestly dont know who the "half a dozen" trouble makers are.

Also the reason why the site isnt as "enjoyable" anymore. SO many things just wander off topic, go political, get closed. I havent been on here too much lately other than just to keep up with any new posts in subscribed threads.

But clicking today's posts.....not much peaks my interest anymore. Im not current on new models so am little help offering advise comparing new stuff, same with working on the new stuff. And with so many other members......often times I find something that I can comment or help on.....someone has already done so.

Between that, and staying busy with tractor and mini-excavator work...not much TBN time anymore. I read, but rarely find it worth posting.

Thread reopened for constructive feedback.

Not sure if I have any constructive criticism other than what I've conveyed to you except to say to say that when a thread goes south (any thread on any sub forum), it usually has a select group of posters (like 4), putting holes in the hull and sinking the ship. That plays out 99% of the time and always the same select group. It's like they hover over the forum, like vultures waiting to pounce.

Then they go for the jugular and the thread gets closed. Seen that play out time and time again on here.

Addressing that, you already know my response to that issue.

+1... get rid of less than half a dozen people and the problem is solved. Two warnings, then third strike "YOUR OUT!"

+2... Muhammad we keep telling you about the troll problem but it never gets resolved. You and the moderators need to be proactive and take serious action that is long overdue. Look at my Ignore List and then ban everybody on it !!! POOF.. TBN will instantly become more enjoyable, civil discussions will flourish, and management will have more time to work on forum improvements rather than chase trolls all day. :soapbox:

I had thought about this and was going to just ignore it and then I decide not too;

so here's my 2 cents;

More LOL. Your ignore list is yours based on your life influencing interactions.

I don't have one...so for example, how to come to a balance between mine and yours?

This should be a tractor forum , NOT an opinion forum ? This is a very good sight for tractor questions , not your know it all opinions on something you nothing about . Kevin .

Actually my Ignore List is based upon violations of TBN Rules/Terms of Use. If you choose not to have an Ignore List that's your prerogative. Here's an idea, perhaps a TBN Universal Ignore List (UIL) could be developed? Instead of banning the trolls management could put them on the UIL. The trolls could post but nobody would be forced to read their crap... call it a compromise.

it is a little discouraging to search the titles for something interesting to me and 1/2 way through the subject totally is changed. but thats what people do...
how did this get started in the rural living anyway?

I'd like to see several check boxes next to each post so a reader could quickly provide feed back on that post. Best feedback would be a system that rates each post on whether it contributes to the site, is neutral, or unhelpful. Maybe an extra box for "unnecessarily abrasive". Members would understand that the ratings are meant to be independent of whether you agree with that post or not. And a post could be rated as both 'helpful' and "unnecessarily abrasive" for example. With time, posters would get an idea if they're posting good stuff, irrelevant stuff, or worse.
