Winter taking its toll here in Michigan

Had a friend in Michigan that wanted to take me ice fishing, I told him I didn`t think that I would like being cold for that long, he said they go out on the lake ice and build a fire to keep warm. I didn`t even call him back.

Somewhere on my list of things to do before I die, is ice fishing out in the middle of a lake in a little hut. One part of me thinks it's just crazy to go out there and be cold, but then the other half of me thinks it sounds like something that would be really cool to try.

For myself, it's more on the crazy side. To each his own though.

I wonder about living in a place where the snow is so heavy and it's so cold out that people die when they get their car stuck, or they lose power to their homes.

There are probably more deaths from riding snowmobiles.

37 inches of snow so far in just December and I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gorgeous in Wisconsin.

If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.

The question would be how many people were born and raised in the north, then moved south (below the Mason Dixon line), then moved back up north to spend the rest of their years COMPARED to the amount of people who were born and raised in the south, then moved north, then back south again. I'm guessing more people who move south stay south then people who move to the north and stay north.

Hey, I loved northern winters and all of the activity snow and the cold weather can provide (kayaking in the morning and snowboarding at night was a favorite). However, I found out that rusted seven year old cars and mud season is not normal everywhere.

That said, I found out when I moved south, when you don't have A/C in your car, rolling down your car windows and driving fast only gives you the "blast furnace" effect instead of cooling you off.

Oh heck thats nothing.lol You should go to the tip-up festival at houghton lake(middle of the state)and see hundreds of motorhomes, cars, trucks, atv, snowmoblies all on the ice at one time, you would think with all that weight the whole lake would open up.coobie

I guess I am used to it, having never lived anywhere else. I don't like temps up over 85 or so. But the difference in winter between se Michigan and the UP is kinda like the difference between Tennesee and southern Michigan. It's 300 + miles further north, and much colder and longer winter. We get some warm ( above freezing ) days every couple of weeks. Once the UP freezes up, it might be a couple of months for a thaw. It might start snowing in October and not stop till March. I read in the early 90's that the UP was one of the few areas of the country to lose population in every census from 1900 on. You can go a long way and see nothing but trees. I think the whole population of the UP is only 200K. And this larger than some states.

I doubt if you would find Yoopers being tired of winter, yet. For many it is their lifeblood (motels, snowmobile dealers, ski shops, ski hills, restaurants). For me it is just a pleasure. I look forward to cross country skiing and snow shoeing when I get back from Barbados tomorrow.

For you trolls (Michiganders who live below the Mackinac Bridge), I agree, it is probably annoyance, since snow on the ground is a hit and miss proposition on a consistent basis. By the way, I saw a lot of snowblowers for sale before I left for Barbados. Come up and check it out.

To each his own when it comes to winter weather. I like snow, but I only like it for a day or so, then it's just a mess. The older I get the less I like hot weather, but it beats cold weather most of the time in my opinion. I usually have some time off this time of year and this year has been great. The first few days were really cold and I had to wear layers to stay warm while I worked outside. After a few days I'd had enough of that and it warmed up. Christmas day was very warm and approached eighty degrees. That might have been a bit too warm, but since then it has been a bit cool in the mornings and warmed up to near seventy or so in the afternoon for the last few days. That works for me. I've occasionally heard folks from the far north say they like four seasons. I do too. I just like for winter to be as short as possible. Fall and Spring are fine. Summer is just too hot almost anywhere you go. Complaining about the weather though makes as much difference as complaining about politicians. It and they will do what they will.

I grew up in a small town just outside of Traverse City and went to college in Marquette. One stays in Michigan because of the winter and winter sports (snowshoeing though the forest is a real treat) PLUS the summers around the Great Lakes can't be beat. I'd go back if I could find a job. :)

You got that right! Marquette is a fantastic spot. My niece went to College there as well. She's now in school at the the Cleveland Clinic but she says everyone who has been in Marquette would love to go back if they could get a job there.

I live across the big lake (Superior) from Marquette and we get a LOT of snow here as well.

Its a bad cell phone pic but the first 4 cars were stopped completely on the road due to the ice. And all 3 slid over to the berm and were stuck. I got out to help but fell when exiting the truck so I decided to salt the drive and sidewalks then head home!

Weather continues here in SW MI. Snow, Rain, Cold, Wind, and record 60+ degrees Saturday. In just over 3 weeks we are headed down to Eddies part of the country. Hope they keep the weather as good as it has been on previous visits.
Most visitors visit MI as a destination. East, West travelers usually bypass MI unless they want to stop in MI. North, South Travelers only travel though MI if they need to be stopping or leaving MI.
Mi is a great place to visit. If you cannot find something to enjoy in MI even in the winter. You can always go to H*LL, MI and watch it freeze over. :D
