Wireless routers cascaded, Ethernet in / Wifi out

extenders should be used as a last resort, the design the OP is using is the best way to extend wireless range.

why do you hate the extender? for what it does, it does it good.. easy to set up too.

Painless to set up, just press the WPS button. But after complaints of insufficient signal out at the far end of its range, I think Ethernet over Powerline will send signal farther. Then out at the end of the EoP link, a Netgear wifi router to propagate Wifi centered at that location.

This is still at the discussion stage. This thread is broadening my understanding of what's reasonable to try out.

My comment was actually directs to littlebil.

Good luck. I've had great luck with extenders and bandwidth, but then with 1.5-3mb DSL speeds, I dont think that's any big deal. :)

Yeah, BTDT.

This upgrade started a couple of years ago when I abandoned my 1999 ATT (then it was PacBell) 1.5 Mpbs DSL at both locations and went to Sonic.net who resells the same thing but cheaper and uncapped. That got me the raw line speed, 2.5 Mbps at the ranch and 6 in town.

When Sonic announced they could re-sell ATT's U-Verse (FTTN) uncapped at the same price I converted both. Now 13.5 Mbps at the ranch and near double that in town. Then I realized my elderly network stuff here was outdated, so this present re-configuration.

I keep up with improvements in technology except one generation behind. I bought all the original networking stuff new, then every upgrade in specs has been as soon as used gear shows up @ $5 in the thrift stores. :)

N-300 spec stuff should be sufficient for a few years distributing the FTTN signal that's not a tenth as fast as that.

you answer the question your self, your only moving 1.5mbit

i didn't say i hate them, i said they should be a last resort. op has the hardware and infrastructure not to use them, thus he shouldn't.

there are 2 big penalty's for repeaters one being they half the bandwidth the wireless is capable of. at 1-3mbit its not really a issue if there is no LAN-LAN transfers. the other big issue is they repeat on the same channel as the main router, remember how i talked about interference and keeping stuff on different channels, well now the repeater is talking on the same channel, which causes congestion, there are more issues, like double-nat but now we are stepping into a bit more advanced conversation.

i just try to design best as possible, just the nerd side in me

...I have it in the back window of the house providing signal to the barn (works fine) and to the cabin but guests say it isn't a full speed signal there. ...

What speeds are you getting at the cabin that quests say isn't full speed? You're limited by your ISP to 13.5. Most of those devices you listed purport to be at least quadruple that speed, so even if they are only performing at 25%, they are still equal to or better than your ISP, aren't they?

Can always use different channels, few other things too.

At low DSL speeds, almost impossible to fail.

Running Android Netgear WiFi Analytics on my phone, signal strength from the existing repeater drops off as I get farther out from the repeater. Likewise Ookla Speedtest, down to under 1 Mbps. By the time I get behind the cabin, outdoors, signal is low to none.

I would like a fresh signal from a router originating inside the back wall of the cabin, to serve there and to radiate out into my equipment storage area back there and the orchard beyond.

can't change the channel the repeater uses, unless its a dual band repeater, but op can do what he wants
