The Santa Fe 2926 is one of 3 locomotives operating in the US that uses roller bearing side rods, the others being Norfolk & Western 611 and Chesapeake & Ohio 614. That number will also soon be brought up to 4 examples when the T1 project is finished. That means these roller bearings are quite the rare part in the industry, so when one starts draining oil faster than the others. Its best to play it safe!
Last Saturday Henry, Kindacircle and Spenser removed the core of the bearing to inspect the oil metering felt rings inside. The felt rings sit in a pool of oil and slowly drip feed the bearing oil as the engine operates. Before the day was done the bearing was back together and 26 was ready to roll. I love seeing these pics. I swear that grease looks blue/green.

Central Pacific (the half that started from the west) made a record that has never been matched, 10 miles of roadbed and rail completed in one day.

I can add some detail to this unit. The handbrake on the left side of the picture adjust the coupler height. The truck frame is an original/ first production/ GE HIAD truck frame from the 80's. It has a large stiffner welded to the side frame / aka both sides/ on the open end of the truck. This was done to correct a weakness in the casting. Later frames were reinforced on the open end to eliminate this problem and no stiffners were needed. I am not sure if the unit was made at SLP and or Boise, but I remember people talking about it.

Stumbled onto this little critter, which appears to be made from NS 8808. Tried doing an internet search for more info but came up short. I'm thinking the Broake & Howe RR needs one like it. :)

What I did as a carmen. Mostly what we worked on was aggregate and grain hoppers and coal gondolas. Cold in the winter and hot as &^$ in the winter. Got burned lots.

Gogebic Iron Range History​

Springtime in the late 1890’s. Iron ore stockpiled during the winter was being loaded onto 40 ton capacity cars. Bucyrus Erie steam shovels on tracks are operating at maximum capacity as steel mills anxiously await shipments from ore boats. This location is now the Jacob Randa memorial softball field which officially opened about 47 years after this picture was taken.
The Norrie mine, Ironwood MI, which in 1916 became the Townsite mine stopped operating in 1936. The cost of hauling ore to the Ashland WI dock was one and a half cents per ton per mile.
