...and me wife asks me why I am pulling hundreds of nails out of 2X4's and 2X6's as I gently recover them from a project.

A year or so ago, they would have went to the landfill. Now they get stacked and repurposed.

^^^^ Guy down the road has a pile of boards apparently left over from the brand new barn they just had built over the last couple of months. Most look to be either 2x6 or 2x8. They live out of state and only come here a few times a year. More money than ....

I'm chompin' at the bit to see them and ask about buying that pile of leftovers.

I finished sawing framing lumber for a new home yesterday; 2X4's, 6's, 12's plus 10X10 posts. A total of 13,907 board feet. The stack in the back is over 12' and the next is over 11'.

All of the lifts are 48" wide.

The Red Oak posts are 9' and the framing lumber is up to 20'.

Which gives reason to Woodmizer having around 6-7 months backlog in sawmill deliveries. I'm fixing to mill 12 twenty foot 2x12s. Don't even wanna know the lumber yard price.

I know you don't want to know, but I couldn't resist looking. I found one(1) at Lowe's. 2x12x20 southern yellow pine @ 38.02 each this morning.

I have a "lumber yard" of used dimensional lumber in an open sided shed. If it's solid and more than 3ft long I save it.

So, what would be YOUR prices for a 4 x 4 x 8 Oak (Red or White)?

How clean are your boards as far as knots, splits, insect bores or similar?

It all depends on how good the logs are that you bring me. Right now a 1x12x 8 foot Red Oak is $56.00 and change at Lowes. I charge anywhere up to half price of big box stores. Lots more if the box stores don't carry it.
When I bought my sawmill, the salesman told me to hide it when I got it home. I asked why, thefts? His reply was, "No, when people see it, they want you to saw for them and you won't have time for yourself." Which is so true. I bought it to build my log house and haven't sawn anything for me.

These logs, I picked up Saturday for free.11-20-20 Huge SYP.jpg Just had to drive 6 miles and wait a few minutes to be loaded. 3 trips with the truck and trailer taking 3 hours. These logs, after two years of sawing for others, will be for my sawmill shed.

I'm fixing to get a lot more fun. Some of these logs are just too big to haul around the with Mahindra on a regular basis. Looking for a telehander with aux hydrualics to hang the grapple onto. Also will be used to hang sawmill shed trusses.

I have been told I am more relaxed. Definitely less stressed not having to do that hour commute across Htown 4 times a week. My stomach is happy. We called the upset stomach, Hobbyitis.

I guess I'm full of questions. I've always been curious about sawing, but never have done any. Now I'm a little too old to get started, but trees just fascinate me. Here it is all pine, fir, and cottonwood....but growing up in Arkansas we had everything. Including some really hard woods like Osage Orange & some thorn trees.

What happens when you hit a nail? How do you charge for that?

I suppose that logs are cut to a standard length? How long? How long do they season? Our climate is really dry = 12% humidity, and when I get any type of decent wood over 2x4 size, the first thing I do is seal the ends with wax. Do folks do that with the logs for seasoning where you are?
Thanks,
rScotty
