Y'all Been Checkin' Lumber Prices?

I'm fixing to get a lot more fun. Some of these logs are just too big to haul around the with Mahindra on a regular basis. Looking for a telehander with aux hydrualics to hang the grapple onto. Also will be used to hang sawmill shed trusses.

I have been told I am more relaxed. Definitely less stressed not having to do that hour commute across Htown 4 times a week. My stomach is happy. We called the upset stomach, Hobbyitis.

Was the same for me. I didn't think I was stressed before I retired. But after about six months I looked back and realized how bad it was.

I have a very Blessed life and I know you do too. :)

I finished sawing framing lumber for a new home yesterday; 2X4's, 6's, 12's plus 10X10 posts. A total of 13,907 board feet. The stack in the back is over 12' and the next is over 11'.

All of the lifts are 48" wide.

The Red Oak posts are 9' and the framing lumber is up to 20'.

MM,
What is your total board feet you have sawn since you got your Woodmizer?

...and me wife asks me why I am pulling hundreds of nails out of 2X4's and 2X6's as I gently recover them from a project.

A year or so ago, they would have went to the landfill. Now they get stacked and repurposed.

When we were little, my older brother helped Dad with the handling lumber and building. My first job was to straighten out the nails pulled out of the boards. Back then, nails were able to be reused. We didn't have the luxury to buy nails when the old ones, after I finished with them, were just as good. Finally, I got big enough to use the crow bar and remove them. I owe everything I can do today to my Dad. Wish he was still around, so I could pick his old farmer's brain.

And today some elements of our society would consider that child abuse......

My dad would bring home old nails from work, and I would straighten them out .
I would comb our local miles of salt marsh shoreline for driftwood material (usually dunnage) for building my docks, and other mini construction projects.

I guess I'm full of questions. I've always been curious about sawing, but never have done any. Now I'm a little too old to get started, but trees just fascinate me. Here it is all pine, fir, and cottonwood....but growing up in Arkansas we had everything. Including some really hard woods like Osage Orange & some thorn trees.

What happens when you hit a nail? How do you charge for that?

I suppose that logs are cut to a standard length? How long? How long do they season? Our climate is really dry = 12% humidity, and when I get any type of decent wood over 2x4 size, the first thing I do is seal the ends with wax. Do folks do that with the logs for seasoning where you are?
Thanks,
rScotty

rScotty,
Ask MagicMM his age. He outsaws me left and right. I buck my logs for the length I need, plus 3-6 inches. It all depends on what you or the customer needs. Customers supply cut lists. They pay the cost of a new blade. Some sawyers charge $35 each time metal is hit. I have a hand wand, like TSA uses, to scan the log for metal. Most trees out in the country are metal free, but deer stand spikes and nails are out there. Most urban trees have nails and such from people nailing signs to the trees. I have found up to 7 nails in one log. Some guys have also hit concrete, because concrete makes great tree filler bandaids.

Moisture content depends on how fast you need the wood and what it is for. I do need to purchase a moisture meter, for hardwood. I don't end seal SYP, and don't saw much hardwood. But lots of guys swear by Anchorseal. I think that is the name.
