I'm not sure I know what a subframe is. Is it something like this?

Yes and no .
Obviously you would want to tie the vertical posts to the front "bumper". It is good to see your engine tied together with the transmission case by a steel bracket.
My impression of a sub frame ties the engine to the rear axle housing. It would keep theh tractor from flexing and cracking any castings.
My Ym155D had a subframe for the front dozer blade and someone welded on vertical supports for a fron loader to it. Seemed to work out great and there was no fear of cracking anything from flex. Maybe it's not necessary.

OK... I too am looking at a NICE YM186D and i'll need a front end loader for it also. I'm wondering if you ever ended up purchasing one. What brand did you buy, and did the mount kit fit, or did you have to modify one from another model. Being in the same boat.... i'm hoping you got all the kinks out for me !!

I never did buy a loader. Still thinking about it but the Kubota has to go first . I don't have a money tree.

Darn ! I was hoping your trial and error would make it easy for me the first time around. I found a YM186D about thirty miles away with 225 hours on the meter. I know.... it may be 1225, but if it is, it was pampered and kept in a garage. I'm 90% sure i'll be buying it, but i really want to make sure a FEL won't be too big of a headache. Thanks anyway !!

You may want to look at the Chinese FELS(Bulldog &AC)that are being sold on a lot of the grey market tractors. I recently bought a grey market 1510d which is the grey version of your 186d. It has a AC FEL on it. It is fairly light but it is made pretty well. Our tractors are pretty light also. It has a forty four inch bucket and I fill it with rocks from the property and it does fine. The hydraulics work well and it will lift the front end off the ground and hold it there. You may want to look for a grey market dealer.

I appreciate the advice. I will look into the imported loaders. This may be a silly question..... but was there a JD compact made with on the same basic chassis that would cross to the 186D ? Or maybe better said, would a loader, or front blade with a sub-frame from a similar JD bolt to the Yanmar without much fabrication? Just thinking ahead to maybe finding used attachments that might fit for reasonable money. I appreciate the knowledge from the guys who have been working with these Yanmars for years !

OK... well i picked up my new YM186D during the snowstorm last night. Went and picked up a new battery...... but since i don't have an operators manual yet, i'm going to ask you guys a question. With the key on, and the tractor either running, or not running, there is a red light on to the left of my dash. It has a "Z" looking symbol on it. Is this simply to tell me the ignition is "on", or is it trying to tell me i have a charging problem?
