YM186D

That's a great looking rig...and you may want to consider hanging on to that finish mower too. They are a high dollar item around here, even one that is in less than average condition.

I found 2 dealers (I'm sure there's more)that have a loader that will fit. They say it may need a little modification . I'm not sure how much . Hoye offers one and so does Len Sheafer. Both had prices with in $100 of each other. I'm not really convinced that they don't need a subframe. Neither dealer said it needed one. This is a Koyker brand loader. I'm sure I can fabricate a subframe but don't know if it is wise to do so. They're not that expensive , not cheep either . I would like to see a photo of your YM186 sometime. I'm thrilled to have found it.

I don't want to get rid of the mower but it will sit out side all year and rot away . I can't use the rear finish in my yard. I would like to see it go to a good home to someone who would take care of it and actually use it.It's probably worth $1000 new . Would like to get $500 for it. It kills me to see it sitting out in the back but I don't have anywhere to store it. Even the tractor sits outside under a tarp. I need a bigger garage!

While I was out servicing my Mitsubishi today , I remembered servicing my YM186D. I did not find anywhere to grease the front axle pivot on the Yanmar . Is this sealed ? The manual does not show there is anywhere to grease. I find it hard to believe that this is a non wear area . Should it be disassembled and greased and reassembled ? Suggestions?

alvanko:

Look again, mine is not a 4x4 but there is a grease zerk in the shaft that mounts the front axel to the frame

I believe all 4wd Yanmars have the pivot pin lubricated by the front axle fluid. The pin actually goes through the case at the front and back and is inside the axle housing in between.

That would mean that there would be 2 "O"-rings keeping fluid in the housing . Also this wound mean that the front diff fluid would be high enough to reach the pivot point. I don't beleive this theory. I have been wrong many times and may be wrong again , but I don't see it.
I'll check the parts book to see if there is an o-ring listed.
I'm sure there is no zerk fitting (pretty sure) as I looked with a creeper and trouble light from the bottom and top.
Anyone else have any ideas?
Thanks!

Several of mine do not have a zerk. I carefully jack and block the tractor and FWD axle, remove the front wheels (less weight and better clearance). Grease generously and reassemble. If your careful when blocking up the tractor, you won't find it necessary to remove driveline from front differential.

I have not seen a pivot encased in, or lubricated with hydraulic fluid.

***edit*** I just went to Aarons website (HoyeTractor.com) at the top of the page... an barrowed the exploded view of a 1401D "4WD EXTERNAL". This detailed view shows everything on a model that should be very similar to your axle. I would look and hopefully it will answer all your questions about your front end.

I've had my 186D for about 10 years. My parts manual shows a bushing and oil seal at the front and back of differential where the pin goes through. The service manual says nothing about greasing the bushings when assembling the differential. The diff. lube must sling or wick up there somehow. My seals are getting old and I can see evidence of lube leaking slightly around the mounting pin at front and back.

gbirky ,
I checked the parts manual and sure enough , it shows oil seals on both ends of the pivot pin and also a "plug" on the top of the housing (pipe plug). If I hadn't seen it I wouldn't belive it. I am not sure how this gets "splash" lubricated , but it must . You would have to pull the axle out to actually access the pipe plug .

This of coarse brings up an other question.
I did go out and jack up the tractor to confirm there are no grease fittings and to feel around for the pipe plug shown' in the parts breakdown. I did not feel the pipe plug. I also do not see any type of vent. Doesn't this get warm under use and wouldn't the fluid expand a little? With out a vent , won't the presure push oil past a seal ?
Why no vent like used on the rear housing ?

I'm not sure I know what a subframe is. Is it something like this?

Eddie ,
Yes and no .
Obviously you would want to tie the vertical posts to the front "bumper". It is good to see your engine tied together with the transmission case by a steel bracket.
My impression of a sub frame ties the engine to the rear axle housing. It would keep theh tractor from flexing and cracking any castings.
My Ym155D had a subframe for the front dozer blade and someone welded on vertical supports for a fron loader to it. Seemed to work out great and there was no fear of cracking anything from flex. Maybe it's not necessary.
See attached photo. The green under carrage is the subframe
Nice Greatbend loader by the way. I saw your other photo.

I think I know what you're talking about now. That shouldn't be too hard to fabricate.

OK... I too am looking at a NICE YM186D and i'll need a front end loader for it also. I'm wondering if you ever ended up purchasing one. What brand did you buy, and did the mount kit fit, or did you have to modify one from another model. Being in the same boat.... i'm hoping you got all the kinks out for me !!

Thanks !

Ductape,
I never did buy a loader. Still thinking about it but the Kubota has to go first . I don't have a money tree.

   / YM186D #37
Darn ! I was hoping your trial and error would make it easy for me the first time around. I found a YM186D about thirty miles away with 225 hours on the meter. I know.... it may be 1225, but if it is, it was pampered and kept in a garage. I'm 90% sure i'll be buying it, but i really want to make sure a FEL won't be too big of a headache. Thanks anyway !!

You may want to look at the Chinese FELS(Bulldog &AC)that are being sold on a lot of the grey market tractors. I recently bought a grey market 1510d which is the grey version of your 186d. It has a AC FEL on it. It is fairly light but it is made pretty well. Our tractors are pretty light also. It has a forty four inch bucket and I fill it with rocks from the property and it does fine. The hydraulics work well and it will lift the front end off the ground and hold it there. You may want to look for a grey market dealer.

I appreciate the advice. I will look into the imported loaders. This may be a silly question..... but was there a JD compact made with on the same basic chassis that would cross to the 186D ? Or maybe better said, would a loader, or front blade with a sub-frame from a similar JD bolt to the Yanmar without much fabrication? Just thinking ahead to maybe finding used attachments that might fit for reasonable money. I appreciate the knowledge from the guys who have been working with these Yanmars for years !

OK... well i picked up my new YM186D during the snowstorm last night. Went and picked up a new battery...... but since i don't have an operators manual yet, i'm going to ask you guys a question. With the key on, and the tractor either running, or not running, there is a red light on to the left of my dash. It has a "Z" looking symbol on it. Is this simply to tell me the ignition is "on", or is it trying to tell me i have a charging problem?
