Your towing rigs and trailers

LOL I wish.
Ended up putting fenders, radiator support, hood, rear door, cab corner, tailgate and converting to a dually to do away with bed rot

Now THAT is a labor of love!

Almost makes me want to get out there and fix up my wife's F350. That's a very maybe (probably not going to happen) "almost".

We picked up this 07 F450 to build us another farm truck. We added the CM bed last week and tested it out hauling the new 140 home. We have a few more additions/upgrades before it's finished.

That looks like a good way to try it out.

New tow rig/work truck for me...'97 F350 7.5 liter gasser 30k miles, frame is all there. Has a cab corner that needs attention and a couple soft spots in the bed. Came with a 9' plow as well:

Nice truck. Is it a 5 speed or auto? Is it a dump?

Nice looking truck. Finding one around here that the frame isn't shot or the body isn't shot it tough. Looks like you have a good one.

Auto and dump body. Came with a 9' plow and has been a yard truck for a couple years so it needs some maintenance and TLC but it's pretty solid. Brand new winter tires all the way around (owner had $1200 in the new tires alone)..previous owner has an excavating company and has a plow on his new truck so no need for a 1 ton dump or plow.

Yeah the frame is all there. The only bad rust is one cab corner, a couple holes in the end of the dump bed and then around the lights just under hte dump bed on the rear (above the pintle plate). Looks like it came through from underneath...

I'd like to have a newer dump truck like that or a dump trailer.

I hear ya. I got this for the same price-ish as a new dump trailer goes for around here. The only thing I am surprised by on the specs for this rig is the towing capacity. What I have found is:
GVWR: 11,000 Lbs
GCWR: 16,000 Lbs
Tow rating: 7,300 Lbs
So the towing capacity is:
16,000 Lbs - Truck wt (NTE 11,000 Lbs) = Towing Capacity (NTE 7,300 Lbs)
Both the GCWR and the Tow rating seem low for this truck to me??

If you have a friendly Ford dealer, have them run the VIN to get the factory rating.

I was thinking closer to 10k# for towing. The Arms Race on towing came later, but that does seem low for a 1 ton.

Good call, the tech specs tab is not the easiest to follow but it looks like the diesel gets the 10k tow rating? : http://www.f150forum.com/vindecoder.php?vin=1FDKF38G8VEA51732#vinDecoderFarea

Likely.... I was looking mostly at diesels back when I was chasing that era of Ford. Ended up with a 7.3.

I like checking in with the factory, for Data That Matters.... that, and what's on the web can be hit/miss. Ex. sometimes you get a Tow listing that reflects what the factory basic receiver is rated for, not necessarily the Max that the truck is designed for.... or the listing is just plain wrong.

I was pretty surprised that it was not a diesel, don't find too many F250/350 that aren't...The rating is within what I have to tow and I am sure hte truck will tow more but I am just kinda stunned by the 7,300 figure...

I think you can tow 5,550lbs with a 1998 Ranger 4.0 auto trans.

GVW is 11,000 and GCWR is 18,500lbs As long as you have 4.10s

Max trailer weigh should be no more than 12,500

And that is about all you want to do with a 460 and an auto

Bradbilt makes a good point about the diff.... 7300 may be spec'd for the tallest rear end. Some guys went with the 460 - if they just needed a local service truck that didn't run a ton of hours, they saved a some dollars on the dealer invoice by going gas.

I know someone with pretty much that exact truck, except stick. 460 pulls fine, it's a strong truck.

If you plan on having it around for a while, consider upgrading the trans cooler. It's a worthwhile thing to do in general, but unless the ATF was regularily maintained, an original trans cooler can be somewhat (or very) restricted by sludge build-up by now. You could just take the original cooler off and properly clean it out, but with how low cost a decent aftermarket higher capacity cooler is, that's the way I'd go. :2cents:

Pls. let us know if you get an final answer from Ford, and what the rear-end is.

Those numbers sound better.

I agree that a larger trans cooler is a good idea and a deeper trans pan would not be bad either.
