Did a test pull of the sailboat trailer today with the Sprinter. Didn’t hit the highway but it seems to handle it fine. It’s probably a bit over the 5,000 lb rating but should allow us to get rid of the Tahoe.

5k pound is about 2300kg.. the lightest 80hp Sprinter with the tallest axle ratio got 2000kg tow rating, your 316 would get 3000 in Europe, or 7.5 ton gross combined with a shorter diff reduction. The 416 dually got a max GCVW as 5th wheel tractor with air brakes, of 8.75 ton.

For some reason they derate the towing limits in the USA, and in the previous generation they derated the 3 liter V6 CDI as well, to 150hp. With the current Sprinter 3500, you guys get the same 188hp rating as we get in the Sprinter 519.

Always the possibility of precedence in lawsuits (re. capacity/accidents), but Big (personal) Trucks = Big Profits here is the main driver, IMO.

, but Big (personal) Trucks = Big Profits here is the main driver, IMO.

So you think they derated the MY 2006 sprinter to 150hp (177hp in Europe back then) to stay clear of the Ram pickup truck market, while after the divorce of the unhappy DaimlerChrysler marriage, the road was clear for Mercedes to sell the 188hp MY 2019 ?

...personally i think its because they were cautious, because they were the first one to introduce a 3 liter Diesel in the American "one ton" 3500 class, and they didnt know how drivers would respond to them: Would they redline the engines like people did with the 80hp versions of the 1st gen Sprinters, or would they enjoy the superior diesel torque and operate the engine in its optimal range, under 3000rpm ?

The thing with undermotorised vans like aforementioned Sprinter 408 with IDI mechanical engine, you had to gun them to keep up with traffic, even with a high rear axle reduction. Meaning that they drove at uneconomical engine rpm all the time, both during acceleration as well as at highway speeds. The 80hp CDI engines were a different animal, it was the same engine as the 130hp but they only derated the top end, not the low end torque.

By the way, they stopped offering the 4 cylinder Diesel version in the USA ?

They stopped offering it after 2016. They are now offering a 4 cyl gas engine, or 6 cyl diesel.

Diesels have great difficulty meeting US Emissions laws, and diesel fuel prices are not subsidized as in Europe. So they have never made a big dent in the market.

The 2006 [Dodge Branded] Sprinter we purchased is the last year of the T1N chassis, with the 5 cyl 2.7L turbodiesel, no DPF, no DEF. Currently 148,000 miles / 238,000km.

I don't know those platforms intimately enough to say for sure....my comment mostly comes from many light vehicles (including cars) having a much higher factory tow rating outside of the USA/Canada market.

Ford has been more than happy to ditch most of their car line, to focus on light-trucks here.... they (and others) make much higher margins on trucks and SUVs, than cars.... that's where the Big Money is here, at this moment in time. What will be interesting is what Ford's Euro vehicle lineup will end up looking like..... even if you could find willing buyers, many urban European buyers would have trouble finding a parking spot for an F150 - home or elsewhere....

They are releasing the Ford Ranger and Ranger Raptor here in Europe. It's a slightly smaller version for the F-150. Pickup trucks are getting more and more popular with more brands joining this market.

About the towing capacity, we are limited to 7700 lbs max. All of our trailers are bumper pull with surge/inertia brakes.

They do that to 18 wheelers too. Makes me want to be on STEP again when I see that.

But I bet they stopped when the only option was eat the side of your trailer... *grin*

Boils down to them not paying attention to their surroundings, watching for turn signals, and driving with respect for others on the road.

Your little helper looks to be about the same age as my youngest son, he will be 2yo in August.

it is a single lane road. i doubt they would do it to a tractor trailer, people just don't think about pickups towing trailers. they also seem to ignore the blinkers too.

greg - i couldn't turn with them inside me. i had to wait for them to go, but i did scare the second guy, hopefully he learned. that's my daugther she will be 2 in Dec so yeah the same age
