This is what we use for the problem of vines suffocating our trees. I used to carry and use a Stihl 029 Chainsaw, but the kickbacks with trying to cut big grapevines is endless.

The comments on poison ivy are all valid- the chain or spinning trimmer blade and/or lines aerosolize the resins like crazy!

I have some experience with cutting an pulling down tree vines of all types...wear a hard hat or helmet and watch what you are pulling on...some branches may be rotted where they join the trunk but otherwise solid and when you pull on a vine it comes down on you...some are big enough that a helmet won't help ...just be careful...

I'd stay away from the poison ivy with that chainsaw though. Too much sap spray on you and the chainsaw. You're going to get a real nasty case of itching and oozing blisters from it. I use a lopper and just cut the vines off at the base, then hit them with a shot of Roundup. Plus the lopper is easy to clean. The chainsaw isn't.
