9N Ford
My Old Ford
Model Year: 1939

I love my Ford 9N. It belonged to my Great Grandfather. He bought it used at John C. Stewart in Cuttingsville, Vermont in the early 1950's. It has a Dearborn belly mounted cutter bar. I leave it on the tractor and it works very well for keeping my edges clean. You can't do that with a brush hog. I need a little utility trailer so I can use it for cutting wood. I've towed plenty of smaller logs with it, but with that cutter bar in place, I'm limited where I can take the old girl. The brakes are horrible. Otherwise I love her. I really appreciate that my Great Granddad who died the year I was born (1967) owned it.

Pros: Small and low. Not tippy. Parts are readily available.
Cons: None.

Ford 9N Tractor
Model Year: 1940

I may be new to buying a tractor but have many years of being a mechanic working on them I have found a small gem in the rough with my 9N even with extremely low compression the little four cylinder will crank easily with all new ignition and wiring systems the hydraulics on ours were brand new and have found them very use full however the weight limit can be reached verily easily other than having to keep fueling up the tractor There is no other problems except for the low oil pressure that comes with the worn engine and normally the first I do is make sure I have enough oil my reason is the worn out bearing and oil pump with large amounts of blow by.

Pros: Easy to operate once engine is in working condition.
Cons: Normally light hydraulics no depth control like the 8N.

Always Wanted a Ford N Model Tractor
Model Year: 1940

I had always wanted a Ford tractor because of memories of one that my grandfather owned many years ago. I finally bought a 9N at a local farm auction, drove it home 20 miles, and then overhauled it. I have found that, although the tractor has been very useful on our property over the years, it can be very awkward to use because of the lack of live power and live PTO. Also, I am getting some steering slop that appears to be in the mechanism between the operator's feet, and I am unable to disassemble the (apparently) aluminum dash assembly from the part it sits on to get to the steering gears. The front distributor engine won't start if it is at all damp, and the tractor won't restart if it stalls instead of being turned off. All in all, it is a fun tractor to own on a warm summer day, but not a practical small farm tractor.

Pros: Cute and fun, cheap to operate, lots of parts available.
Cons: Hard to start, no live PTO.

Old Guy Works
Model Year: 1941

Brought the 9N with a for sale sign pained on the hood and painted in some awful color of blue and red. Restored what was need and put her to work of cutting about 3 acres a week with a old Land Pride 72" finishing mower picked up an auction and also restored. She has been reliable and fun to use.

Pros: Does what she is supposed to do.
Cons: Little short of power but she handles the mower.

1939 Ford 9N
Model Year: 1939

I'm very new to both the garden tractor and agricultural tractor thing. I purchased 10 acres of land [7 acres of pasture] in the fall of 2011. I knew I'd be needing a tractor to keep the pasture cut, so I picked up a 1939 Ford 9N. I was told that it was kept out of the weather its whole life, and I'm not surprised---it's very clean and ran great right from the start. I'm planning to pick up a brush hog in the spring and work on the part of the pasture [5 acres] that we don't plan to use as lawn. For the other 2 acres, we started maintaining that with a new Cub Cadet 2100 GTX.

Pros: Simple, well built, classic.
Cons: Lack of safety features.

My Adventures
Model Year: 1941

Bought this well used tractor and equally well used brush hog to clean up about 25 acres of an abandoned orchard. Lots of tall sumac and everything else. Was not easy but got it done. Was getting a lot of blow by so decided to tackle my first overhaul of any engine: pistons, sleeves, valve train, and adjustable lifters. Started right up and ran great for about 5 hrs. Apparently, a previous owner had fixed a cracked block with some substance I have never seen before. Couldn't handle the extra compression, I guess. Found another block and just completed the process for second time. It runs well But have not put it to the test yet. I have learned a lot and actually had fun despite the frustrations. Any ideas on getting the new sleeves out of the old block with out ruining them. I do not have one of those custom made drivers. Thanks.

Pros: Simplicity and easy to get parts.
Cons: Of course it's limited in what it will do, but I bet it was pretty special in '41.

Good Light Duty Purpose
Model Year: 1940

This tractor has been in my family for 61 years. I inherited it after the passing of my dad. I still use it mainly for garden work, but it has turned many acres with a two gang plow. As with the 8N, it is very durable and can be overhauled numerous times as needed.

Pros: Very durable and easy to work on.
Cons: 3 speed transmission.

My First Tractor
Model Year: 1939

This is my first tractor purchase other than small lawn tractors. I have always wanted an old Ford tractor and have been casually looking for a number of years. A good deal presented itself in a Ford 9N just a few kilometers down the road from my home and I couldn't resist. So far I have had no real troubles and have used it very little.

Pros: Simple and easy to work on.
Cons: No live hydraulics.

9N: One Tough Piece of Work
Model Year: 1947

Inherited tractor when my Dad passed away. We worked the old girl clearing land, plowing fields, hauling logs out of the woods, plowing massive amounts of snow here in Nova Scotia. Converted to 12 volts, electronic ignition (a true blessing), new gas tank and carb solved a lot of problems we had experienced. The tractor now starts right up regardless of how cold and just keeps on working. Motor has never been rebuilt yet still has lots of power for a small tractor. Simply describe the 9N as good value for a unit that can be repaired relatively easily.

Pros: Reliable performance with minimum/regular maintenance.
Cons: Front mounted distributor, no down pressure or external hydraulics.

Old Friend
Model Year: 1941

I first drove this tractor when I was 15 years old, when my father bought it (used) in 1947. Then, when my father died (1966) my mother sold it to my brother-in-law and in 1988 he sold it to me. It looks old, rusty and tired, but; it keeps on going and is powerful as ever. At some point, the motor was re-sleeved and rebuilt and it has been used very little since. It is a part of the family. I consider the Ford-Ferguson System a marvelous development and the tractor a very reliable implement.

Pros: 3-point hook-up and gasoline (not distillate) powered engine.
Cons: Lift is not selective.

Good Deal
Model Year: 1932

Purchased a long time ago and re-painted it. Have installed a new carburetor, changed to 12 volt system with electronic ignition (best thing ever). Changed the original car tires on the front to tractor tires and wheels. Still using it to plow my driveway and haul my firewood. If they could only build things like this these days!

Pros: Simple, simple, simple.
Cons: Wish it had 4 wheel drive.

9N - Some Assembly Required
Model Year: 1939

As a tractor I love it - I do wish it had the brake pedals both on the right, power steering, and live hydraulics.

Pros: Price, fun factor, Sherman Step-up, history, price.
Cons: Clutch pedal & left brake shuffle.

Starting Problems
Model Year: 1939

Ever since I bought this tractor I was having starting problems with it. It was burning through coil after coil. Finally I took it to a local tractor mechanic. He replaced the alternator (12v conversion) wiring and points. Now the tractor runs like a champ! I rebuilt the carburetor, changed the oil, replaced the filter in the oil bathe air filter and replaced the fuel filter screen! Perfecto! Once I replaced the oil pressure gauge, I became even more satisfied! 40 psi at idle!

Pros: Workhorse - ease of servicing - availability of parts.
Cons: No front applications.

1939 Ford 9n sn2040
Model Year: 0

I bought this from a friend who bought it from the farmer who bought it new. The farmers name was Stanley, so that's his name. It was in good shape when I bought it, I painted and did some minor things, coils, points and stearing gears, runs well. I also have a 8n that's a mess. I haven't got that running yet. It backfires and gets hot when it does run, don't know where to start on that one. The distribor seems to be in a different position than the manuals show.

Pros: I grew up on a tractor like this. It is fun to use.
Cons: No live power.
