Computer on or off?

As for electro- devices and loengevity.. especially electro-mechanical devices.. i still can't help but think that steady state is better than start/stop.

Its not near the issue it was 20 years ago. I make computer chips and they are designed so much better now than they used to be. Yes, don't turn your computer on and off every 30 seconds, but if you are going to be gone over an hour or two, you are fine.

I went around my employer's building and added up the wattage of the lights in the largest rooms in the building. If they would turn the lights off for just 5 hours a day in those rooms (no one here then, anyway) they would save $12,000.00 a year. I got a big thank you and a cool coffee mug. :D

So.......did they turn them off, or did you just get the mug, and a nice "Thank you and please go away"?

Good point. I know of a few situations where someone pointed out how a co. could save a few thousand a year.. and they were more or less punished or reprimanded for being too nosey!

No good deed goes unpunished!

I don't leave my vehicles idling 24 hours a day when not in use, so I don't leave the home computers on either. Seems like a waste of energy. They can't get hacked into if they're off either. I suppose if you abandon your telephone land line and opt for VOIP service through your computer such as that MagicJack gizmo, then I guess you would have to leave the computer on all of the time.

Another good apples to oranges comparison as with the car running analogy...

Do you turn your computer on and off each day? Leave it on all the time? Just curious as I have heard arguments both ways.

As a person owning a computer repair business I find that computers that are left on continuously need to be cleaned of collected dust and lint, so if you have applications requiring the PC to be on most of the time I recommend more frequent disassembly and cleaning. It is amazing the collection they can make in the cleanest of surroundings.

Thanks for the heads up. I've noticed anytime I open my case at home that I have a lot of dust build up. I'll make a point to clean it out more often.
