Computer on or off?

/ Computer on or off? #51
Thanks for the heads up. I've noticed anytime I open my case at home that I have a lot of dust build up. I'll make a point to clean it out more often.

A jet of compressed air played carefully into a laptop fan's exhaust port can do wonders for temperature build up.

So.......did they turn them off, or did you just get the mug, and a nice "Thank you and please go away"?

Chuck

They turn them off. My employer is very good about employee suggestions and looking into anything that will save money, be good for the environment, good for the employees, etc... kinda old fashioned, yes? :)

Another good apples to oranges comparison as with the car running analogy...

soundguy

He's got a point. You can get away from the scene of the crime faster if you don't turn the car off. :D

Remember a few years ago the discussions here regarding leaving your tractor running VS shutting it off? The discussion covered several aspects, like wear on the starter, fuel savings, environmental issues and just plain immoral (my opinion) by some folks that out right said they didn't care if it wasted fuel or caused pollution.

Just make sure it is compressed air and not contact cleaner. The cans look surprisingly similar. One goes psssssssst and the other goes WOOOF! when sprayed on hot components.

I did that with a projector a few months ago. Look at these two cans. Big ball O' fire. Funny thing is, the dust was gone! :D

I mean, it says right on the can, BLOW OFF, so you glance and think AIR.

Compairing internal combustion to electro mechanical.. or plain electronic / silicon junction?????

I'm not sure he's comparing the two more so the action. In my mind , unless there is a specific propriety reason for keeping a modern day computer running ; leaving a computer running based on longevity fears or break down concerns is as silly as leaving your car running for the same reasons. The savings one will accrue by shutting down will allow that person to buy another computer in 4-5 years depending on local kwh costs. Here after all the surcharge fees and taxes, we are paying .16 per kwh. Running my 200 watt draw computer 24/7 would cost me $276.48 per year. If I left my computer off for 16 hours per day, I save $184.13 per year X 4years = new computer with monitor.

I believe this is going to boil down to a gear vs HST type answer.. IE.. what works best for the individual is BEST.

if you have an application where you use the cpu 2x per day, 8hrs apart.. with absolutely no need for it inbetween.. then yeah.. power it down.

If yuo on the other hand need to use it frequently all day.. then leaving it on is a time savings.

Also keep in mind that a computers absolute maximum power rating is not what it always draws.. sleep and hibernate modes can significantly cut power.. especially with new power savings monitors that actually soft-off the spendy crt.. or even the more efficient lcd units.. etc.

I use the big yellow 60 gallon "can" of air out in the shop. :D

Absolutely right; sleep and hibernate modes save much energy as long as the computer is set to do just that. You are also right about maximum draws. It varies for each computer and stated draw and actual draws can be very different. My computer (and is why I used my computer) is rated for over 300 watts. It has additional cooling and some other stuff. My point was dramatic but that was just to give another motivation to shut down a computer at the end of the day if there is no propriety reason to keep it running. It will not break because one shuts it down. It may become dysfunctional for another reason but turning it on and off will do no harm. (If indeed that was one of the concerns of the op) Conveniences not withstanding

I still have issues with that.

based on principles of physics.. changes of states will cause some effect.. even if it is epsilon...

Our home desktops get put into sleep mode some nights but left on other nights to do back ups and security updates. My four servers at work don't get turned off much at all. One server is in a lab space which has a Emergency Power Off(EPO) test once or twice a year. For that test the system gets turned off AND unplugged. The only hard drives problems I have had have been during the EPO tests when the power comes back up and the drives have problems.

Our oldest home system started making some funky noises in Octoberish. The video started acting up at the same time. Opened the system and it was full of dog dander. The system was driving the video and power supply fans to deal with the heat from the dog danger. Fried the video card. I have opened systems back when people could smoke in the office. The systems would be very dirty but nothing compared to our system with the dog dander.

We have some lights in the house that have been on since 1/2005 with the exception of power outages. They are low wattage task lighting in the kitchen that we leave on since they make nice night lights. Maybe 100 watts total so at 10 cents a KWH it costs us a quarter a day for the light. Its worth 25 cents when we have to get up in the middle of the night to check on the kids or dog. Throw in another 25 cents for the power for the computer is a who cares in my total expenses. That extra 25 cents for the computer being on getting updates, backing up or recording TV shows is worth it.

Later,
Dan
