Hi:

I'm not sure of all the part names but I have a tubless rear tractor tire that is leaking air at the valve stem area.

I changed the core housing and core. Come to find out it is leaking right at the rim nut.

Can I pull "that piece" (don't know the part name) out of the rim and replace it without removing the tire from the rim?

Thanks:

Yes, but you'll need to break the tire loose from the bead on the valve stem side so you can reach inside the rim/tire to remove the old stem/replace with new stem.

Try tightening the nut. Since it's a tractor tire, it probably won't have extreme psi. If so (ie...a trailer wheel....ect) Lower to something less than 15-20 psi. You don't want a high pressure blowout of the stem while you're twisting on it. I've had a few that will seal up. Might save you a LOT of work.

I agree with Vern, but it is not easy to break the bead. If you can break the bead, then check for rust, clean it and install a new valve stem assembly. Here is a source for bead breakers. Breaker bar and hammer might do it.

Bead Breakers

I have one of these, can anyone verify whether it is pneumatic or hydraulic. I changed the input fitting to a hydraulic fitting that would work with a hydraulic jack, but after looking at the picture I am not sure. In the above page of bead breakers, I believe that the yellow foot control box is an air powered hyd pump. On the same page, they show one with what looks like an air fitting. The blue one. The way I thought it worked was that you placed it on the wheel bead, and applied air or hydraulic pressure, and the breaker would clamp to the bead rim, and push out another cylinder to push the tire off the bead. Any body use one of these breakers before, and if so, please provide operation details of the unit.

We used to have a bead breaker like the blue unit pictured , it was hooked up to a air over hydraulic pump which had a foot pedal to extend and retract the cylinder . Worked very good on rusty split rim wheels .

You can break the bead and replace the rubber seal inside the rim at the stem ...
or remove the air from the tire take the nut off the stem and force some RTV silicon past the stem into the rim to get it inside at the stem. This will be a little messy but it is an easy clean up. reapply the nut, air up and you should be good... be careful not to loose the stem inside the rim while working with it. KennyV.

Any one ever use a Bh Bucket to break a tire bead?

Thanks Kenny ... putting the gasket material behind the nut worked!

JJ from what you showed on the prices on bead breakers, unless you use them alot it would be cheaper to carry it to a tire store, have them put in a new valve stem, or have a new tire put on according of course to what kind of tire it is. zman

You are right on some repairs, but did you read about some of the charges that the tire repair people charge. I bought mine at a flea market, and the person probably did not know what it was. I believe I gave about $10 for it. I still don't know how to use it. One of the handles is for holding the bead breaker, the other handle is threaded. I hooked it up to a hyd pump, and the clamping cylinder works.
