Any good generators for a welder?

IMO it boils down to where you want to weld "offsite" and what you plan on welding. Other factors is the amount of equipment to move "generator, welder, bottles etc." For the price you will be paying for a suitable generator you could find a used welder/generator. Also if you are welding outside you will be encountering wind and that will also raise additional problems with mig so a welder/generator will give you an additional welding process.

Just get a ready welder and run it off car batteries.

I looked into those types of welders and they would be ok for light duty short welding but unless you hook 2 or 3 batteries in series to raise the voltage to 24 or 36 volts you would be most likely limited to thinner materials. I believe you would be limited to about 20 minutes of welding before the batteries would be exhausted. Also I'd be wary of hooking up to my vehicle battery especially new vehicles as the current draw plus electrical noise generated on the vehicles system could damage it's computer or alternator

And using batteries wouldn't solve the emergency power backup part of the question.

I'd keep on CL and get an old welding machine/gen combo. You get a GOOD generator and the portability of a good stick welder as well. However, the PTO generator is another excellant solution, if you won't need the tractor for snow removal
