Buying Advice L4740 HST or MX5100 HST????

   / L4740 HST or MX5100 HST???? #21
I was kind of surprised as I was kind of hoping the L5240 was naturally aspirated. One day my L5030 will wear out and I really didn't want to go with a turbo. We have one on our M8540 and it really isn't a problem, but we don't do much stop and hop off operating with it like we do with the L.

the turbos work fine with stopping an starting as far as i can tell.your L5030 should last you 20 or 30yrs.im planning my MX5100 HST lasting that long or longer.

The manual on our M8540 calls for a cool down period prior to shutting down, so we leave it running if we have to dismount for a bit while I just shut my L5030 off.

We are probably being over protective of it, but really hate to take chances.

I am sure the L5030 will out last me if I keep it, but when I start having repairs, I am trading it off. I can only walk short distances and don't want to get stranded back off in a valley somewhere with no cell reception. I know break downs can happen with newer tractors, but they are much less likely.

We have some tractors built in the 50's out at another farm that my brothers use, so these things can last a very long time with a little work here and there. I have, however, had to walk home on more than one occasion though.

I have. 4740. Only complaint I have so far is the seat. It bottoms out when I hit a bump. I crank the ajustment but it still bottoms out and the back of the seat is up higher then the front and not comfortable. I talked to my dealer and said kubota would not warranty it. It is a 4 month tractor. I hope that is not the performance I get when something else goes wrong. It will cost me $1500 get a new seat. Not many company's will play fair. Kinda disappointed.

Does your tractor have a knob or a lever for the PTO? I know the -3 model upgraded the seat, it now swivels (they have a knob to engage the PTO). I know I have my seat set to bottom out if I hit a real hard bump or if I hit several good bumps in a row. But I could tighten it up more. I would guess it'll handle 300 lbs or more. As far as being tilted forward, mine isn't. Compared to my Case BH the Kubota seat is much better all around.

I think the cool down depends more on what you were doing than time. If you just plowed the back 40 and really worked the engine hard it will need more time. But if you just spent 5 minutes driving back to the barn/ shop and really weren't stressing the motor the turbo really isn't going to benefit from idling for another 5 minutes. It would be nice if Kubota added an oil temp gauge to the turbo models.

You and me both. I would say anyone who thinks like us should worry less about the costs and more about picking out the features they want or could want. After all what's an extra $2000 when you spread it out over 30 years?

You're absolutely right. When you've had the turbo spinning fast and getting hot from compressing a lot of air, you need time to cool it down WITH LUBRICATION. People who just chop it off have a problem because it spins down from 20,000+ rpm with no oil circulation. Let it idle for a minute or two before engine shut down when you've been using it very hard (WOT etc).

That is pretty much how we do ours. We have two fields adjacent to the shop area, so we do the full cool down. When mowing etc. in the other fields, we use the slow trip back for the cool down. We will sometimes swap out tractors and plan our next move and it is hard to communicate with the engines running, plus it is often a good time for a short break and the cool down is a little inconvenient.

It is not a big deal, just a little inconvenient.

Yep, the temp gauge would sure be nice.

I wonder if there was a relatively easy way to put an external temp gauge on. Just a thought.
