Right on- to add to that, the key is the GVW of the trailer. Once you go over 10,000 lbs. GVW on the trailer, you need a class one-at least here in MA. You can buy a 73,000 lb triaxle dump and you just need a class 2. You could even pull a skid steer trailer with that big truck and its ok. But once you put a trailer on it that is over 10,000 lbs- which you will need to pull a 410- you need a class one.

Good luck.

As for Rick's point on the medical- I don't think anyone would bother you-but if you run I-84 say up near the MA line and the Coop is open-chances are they might ask to see it.
For what a med card cost, I would not blow it off. If you do a little looking around, some of the walk in type clinics do DOT physicals. I paid 50 bucks for my last medical checkup. Walked out with the full paperwork and my card. Good to go. Gotta be cheaper than a ticket and paying someone else to move the truck for you.

Admittedly, I am not up on the pee in the cup thing having bagged the road gig. Not sure without a little digging on the FMCSA site if there is anything to deal with for the OP's application.

The only place I see 1-ton trucks pulling full-sized TLB's is in television ads. It may be within the weight ratings of some trucks, but that doesn't make it a good idea. Pulling and stopping are two different things.
Try going to a real construction site some time, they pull AND stop the loads just fine...

Real contractors around here have ten wheelers and triaxles.
I work at a dealership that sells and services full sized TLB's and I can't think of one single customer that hauls a TLB with less than an old F600 or C-70 with a dump body. If someone hauled a TLB in or out in the last 14 years behind a one ton, it was on a day when I wasn't around.

Posting that reminded me of a customer with a Ford 655A with over 8000 hours that he hauls with a red mid-1970's C-70 with I believe a 427 gasser in it. Both truck and backhoe look and run nearly as good now as when they were new.

IMO, First choice? I would look for an old single axle Mack- R-600 or U-600. Ideal truck would have a 237 horse Maxidyne and a six speed low hole trans. the 6 speed might be a stretch so you would probbly have to settle for a 5 speed. This truck would be late seventies, early 80's and you should be able to find a decent one for under 10 grand. Most of these out there would have been tractors (the 5 speeds) in their original life and then they were converted to dump service.

As for the Fords, likewise plenty of old Ford LN -9000 tractors are still running around that have been converted to dump trucks. Even an LN 8000 with the 7.8 Ford or if its newer, an 8.3 Cummins will do the job. As for trailers, don't get anything less than a 10 ton tag trailer. Also don't rule out an International in particular if it has a DT 466. Plenty of power for what you want to do.

Red, I like your thoughts and agree on all. I drove a U model w/ 237 and 5 speed pulling a Elgin Pelican Sweeper on a 12 T tilt deck weighing 7K. If you can find a nice R model with a 300 9 speed, go for that. That is what I finished with (sold the business 15 years ago), it pulled way better (that is a technical term!

Thank you for clarifying these details:)

With respect to Duff, each state's CDL laws are a bit different and each state enforces differently. Can one usually fight Mass' interpretations? Yes, but is it worth it, usually... no

Come to my neck of the woods. You will see it every single day.

Just last week I was in Austin TX and I saw a 2 guys leaving my hotel parking lot.

Truck 1 was a newer Dodge 3500 with a slide in camper, pulling a 35' camper, pulling a 23' Boston Whaler.

Truck 2 was a 08 or newer F-350 with a Polaris UTV in the bed, pulling a 35' camper, pulling a 20' car hauler with another UTV and 2 quads.

The guy across the street pulls his Case 560 BH to every job site with his SRW Ford F-350 and tri axle equipment trailer.

I agree. We pull big loads like that all the time here.

For a 20 mile radius, THE BEST scenario is to just drive the backhoe to the different work sites. By the time you have loaded and chained down and unloaded the machine, you could be half way there.
