Take the cover off and spray some oil on the bearings. Quicker and easier than replacement and costs about $0.

Well Shield Arc, now you've gone and done it. Here I was, dumb and happy with the free Lincoln AC-225 I'd been given for free. Now you have to show me that life gets MUCH better with 2 knobs. :D

It's totally unimaginable to remember ever machine I've run in my lifetime, but I'm confident I've never run a Tombstone or a Thunderbolt. I have seen them, just never had the opportunity to run one.
If you want more dials and knobs you could always buy one of these.;)

Way back in the olden days... 1970s. When they actually had shop classes in public schools that taught ya something.
We all learned on Lincoln 225 amp AC welders. The first year of welding we only used 6011 as the teacher thought these taught you the basic of welding better than other rods. I must have welded a thousand feet of auto springs. Ts, filet's, flat all positions of welding and then take them to the press and break'm. All the grades were based on strength with looks counting for a smaller % of the grade.
Now I seldom use anything but 6013 & 6014 and still using the same Lincoln that I got X-mas back in 1971. Also have a Miller 211 that get's most of my welding choores but if I need something to be stout I still get my 6011's out.
Just a O'l farm boys two cents...

Shield Arc,

From your pictures, the 2nd set, are you welding or performing open heart surgery? :D:laughing::laughing:

M-a-y-b-e a step up from what I presently own. How many digits go in front of $___K to buy one of those??? :confused2:

To replace that blue one, you'd need a 9, and 3-zeros +. The red one you'd need a 3, and a 5, and 2-zeros. :D

There be no a di-alin' in with ye old tombstone, take it or leave it!:laughing:...

Well, I would not look at it as a take it or leave it scenario in regards to a High or Low range aspect at least on a homeowner grade buzzbox. (Shieldarcs knobs and dials on his fine welders are a totallly different class of machine in both price and capability and aimed a true professional). As mentioned in my previous post: The Lincoln with its single dial automatically combines within the selector switch the best combination of the primary and secondary portions of the transformer for each particular amp setting so it is in effect more error proof for the user - Impossible to get it wrong with this system.

The only place the Lincoln is take it or leave is in regards to the amp settings being 10 to 15 amps apart between settings. Impossible to adjust up or down an amp or two, but it is good enough for what it is which is a homeowner/hobbyist grade machine. And the Lincoln has stood the test of time - I believe it is celbrating its 50th anniversary this year and a lot of those 50 year old units are still useable today.

I am confident you will like the 7014 as it burns sweet on AC power like you have. Many shops even used it back in the day before wire feeders became so common.

I quite agree. You've got to be doing something right for that model to continue on with what seems like almost no change over that 50 years.

No, I can't burn rod at 78 amps, but it will burn it good enough to hold what I want joined together to stay together.

I do hear A LOT about the grass being greener on the DC side of the fence though... :D:laughing::laughing::laughing:

your tombstone will burn 6011 rods real good.if you want some high priced rods try some certanium or esab.i like them best, but i have not used them all.most of the time forney or even carquest rods work fine.remember 6011 for thick steel 6013 for thin steel, after you get some welding experience you will see why 6011 is the go to rod on the farm.
