IIITTTTT'S baack!!!!!! I got the dump back this morning :D I think it looks pretty good and I'm happy .....for the most part. Joe called me and I asked him how much I owed, He said "well I said it would be between $50 and $100 but I need $125, there was more worked involved then I thought." In his defense, he quoted me over the phone sight unseen. I am happy with the job and the price and in the end thats all that matters

... You said in one post that you pay .15 cents a pound for steel? I'm in Rockland county NY (45 min north of NYC) and I just purchased a 1' x 1' x 1/4" piece of steel from a local fabricator. He charged me $21.50. I would guess the total weight was no more then 10 or 12 lbs. I love working with steel, but at these prices, who can afford to? Am I missing something, or am I just looking in the wrong places?

I just bought a 3' piece of angle from, prob the worst place to get it, Home Depot. Can't weigh even a pound ... EIGHT BUCKS

The good news is, turns out I didn't need it, so I'll be returning it for a full refund. Hopefully that'll make my sore fanny feel better.

$125 is still not bad for that paint job.

Just a curiosity question... Why didn't you just have him finish paint it, too?

Iplay, He does structural steel and just does primer in any color you would like ......as long as it's red oxide!!!!! :laughing:He shot it with an airless system. Ya know paint sure does hide some ugly welds!!!! I just got a 2.5 power cheater lense for my weld helmet, sure do wish I had goten it about 2 months ago!!

I hear ya. For me it wasn't the cheater lense, but doing a project in the sunlight. A lot of light in the right place really helps my welding.

Paint is bought! Kubota orange for the dump and gloss black for the frame. I couldn't find any Kubota gray at TSC. The closest I could find was MF Gray and that isn't even close! :(

I started to get ready to paint this evening and the first thing I did was to take the dump bed off the running gear. All I had to do was remove the lynch pins from the hinge pins and pull the hinge pins out and use my chainfall to lift the bed off.

I welded the tube to the bed because I will not be removing the sides at all. The dump cart I am replacing with this one has removeable sides and in 25 years that I have had it I dont think I removed the sides more than 2 or 3 times.

guess where I put the dump to get it out of the way. I pulled the sides off the old dump I am replacing with this one and set the bed on it and pulled it out of the shop with the tractor. Maybe I use it as a flat bed more than I thought  Oh well I'm not going to change the sides now!!!

the first pic is lifting it off the running gear and second pic is the running gear without the bed and the last pic is the bed on the old dump. I got the running gear painted tonight but it was to late to get pics, maybe tomorrow I will get them.

I just got a 2.5 power cheater lense for my weld helmet, sure do wish I had goten it about 2 months ago!!

I hafta show my ignorance again! What is that 2.5 power cheater lens? I could certainly use some help seeing where my welds are going. Right now I'm using a hand held shield. I'm always looking at myself looking at myself in that fool thing and sometimes the available light makes the reflection too strong to see the welding. Depending on what you can tell me about the cheater lens, I may invest in one of those auto-darkening lenses. BTW, any user advice on that kind of helmet?:confused2:

It is a lens that inserts in to a hood that magnifies an object or corrects the eyesight for us older welders. They come in different powers and in different shapes to fit almost any hood. It is like those reading glasses, cheaters, which you can buy at the drug stores. Any welding shop should have them. Take you shield in and they can find one that should work!

Moored4 is absolutly correct on the cheater lense. I got mine from work. in my case it's old eyes. I can see the hair on a frogs back at 100 yards just don't ask me to read the paper if you take my glasses! I work in a very big shop, about 5000 people and we have our own med center and an optical department.

"I may invest in one of those auto-darkening lenses. BTW, any user advice on that kind of helmet?"

I bought an auto darkening shield from HF and would not go back to a regular one. I love it and it works great!!
I have 2 hand held shields and a regular hood and they just sit on the shelf collecting dust! I learned to weld with a stick welder and used a hand held hood, when I switched to a regular hood it took me a while to figure out what to do with my free hand!! now that I have the mig I just hold my triger hand steady with my free hand!

Here are the pics from last nights paint session! don't look to closely I am a better welder than a painter and I struggle with the welder so....!

I am sure glad I took the advice that was offered and did the running gear a different color than what I am going to paint the dump. I just wish I could have afforded the Kubota gray instead of black but oh well it looks good and will not be like most of mf projects....Rusty brown!!
wont get much done today or this weekend as I have a feuneral today and friends comminig over tomorrow, but vacation next week!

it took me a while to figure out what to do with my free hand!! now that I have the mig I just hold my triger hand steady with my free hand!

In these parts the free hand is for swatting them steroid enhanced mosquitoes we have around here. We buy our grandchildren boots that are two sizes too big and put lead liners in 'em to keep them from gettin' carried off!!!:laughing: I also started out welding with a stick type. The wirefeed I have now is getting old and I'd love to have a newer one with a wider range of amp settings. I'm not going to say I have learned to weld - that would start an argument if any of you have seen my disasters!:D

Thanks for the reply about the auto darkeners. I'll have to squirrel away some funds for that and wait for a sale to come along. As for the cheaters, I already wear old man glasses. I call them "triple pain":p:p I need the middle range for reading the instrument panel on the various vehicles I drive.

I wear the triple pains also:laughing: but you have to hold your head just so-so and then tilt you head just right to line up the sight patter!!!! :mur: well it don't work so I got 2 pane, with just a little lower pane with the rest 4' to 10' focuse, and then use a cheater so now I'm able to use the whole lence to see! :D

Hope I made it clear what I'm doing!

I set up to paint the dump bed today. Let me just get this out there I am NOT repeat NOT a painter!! I wish I could use the words of Jonny Bench in a certain Rustoleum comercial from the 70's, "no runs, no drips, no errors!" but aslas I was never a good baseball player either!!!!

I started by standing the bed upright with the chainfalls. Next I tried the HF airless sprayer I don't know what I was doing wrong but the paint came out in a splater stream and just ran down the bed. Good thing I tested it on the bottom! so I went to the air spray gun and did the whole thing. I got many runs and drips in the paint but hopefuly you can't zoom in close enough to see them!!

I had enough paint left to shoot my 3PH forks and my Pig pole, They have been painted blue because that was the color of the former tractor (ford 1310 4x4)
Here are some pics for your enjoyment!!! I didn't take the time to clean them up but they are covered and thats what I wanted.

Here is my version of Sandmans, "Ugly" trailer. I built this trailer about 20 or 25 years ago and it has served me well over the years and even contemplated adding hydraulic dump to it by building my own sciszor lift but it didn't work out and I did nothing with it, then I found TBN and read all the about all the good build projects on here (expecialy Iplayfarmer's hyd dump) and it gave me the encouragment to make a new trailer from scrach. This trailer originaly was made from th axle of a David Bradley two wheel tractor and had no bearings and made so much noise it drove me nuts!!!! So about 10 years ago I put the rear hubs from a 1988 olds delta 88 on it and quieted it down.

That trailer reminds me of one I built in my younger years. For all I know it's still out there somewhere. I sold it about 30 years ago or so. I hope you're OK with your phone number being out there on the net. It's easily readable off the photo:shocked:
