How tight are your chains?

i have 2 link ladder chains and they are also a bit bumpy when driving on concrete, but i don't even notice them when driving on gravel roads pushing snow.

Mine are super bumpy on my gravel driveway! Now I am wandering if I can add some of my own chain in-between to soften the ride...

Yes. I have done this and it does help to smooth the ride.

Depends upon what you want your chains for. For winter snow and ice, i usually make them tight. For mud, loose chains clear themselves of mud much better.

Yes, you could...but consider the added weight during installation.

Roy has a good point about the added weight when adding more cross chains. I have a set which I added cross chains to and I have to drag them around plus it's a pain to install those chains. This particular set is for a farm tractor and I'd guess each tire chain is well over 200 lbs. Of course compacts would be lighter but still very heavy.

Ken, I will have to find a happy medium with them then.... I am not done pulling firewood out yet and we have had nothing but rain here in PA.....

Yeah I have no idea how these are going to be taking off and putting on? The dealer installed them for me this time... All I know is I can feel my inside shaking apart going down my driveway in low range... Maybe I will just leave them be this year other than snugging them up a bit...

No doubt, installation is going to be a PITA the first time you do this. Heck, just untangling and getting them laid down straight is a job!

What kind (style) of chains do you have? What size?

Not sure? Looks like they are spaced apart about 12"-14"... They look really big and heavy! I will try to take a picture of them tonight when I get home from work and post it on here...
