I was worried that might be inferred, and was gonna preemptively and specifically disclaim any such activity

I was gonna say you don't want to be in possession of handcuffs in your car.

Unless you are LEO, isn't there laws against it. I think there are here anyway.

Especially combined with carrying your gun, I would think that would raise some suspicions. I guess they would make a decent gun lock, but so would the cable locks made for guns

I bought a good pair of the real thing a long time ago, not sure why. Never used them for anything.

JB.

I guess being a retired LEO, I didn't really think of that, I carry my old ID and badge with RETIRED on them. Some laws don't apply to retired LEO; probably need to check, but since I gave mine to my son when he was a Police Officer it is a moot point. I'm sure not going to spend the money on a new pair as a cable lock is a lot cheaper and have several as we got them free.

My son is no longer in Law Enforcement; going to college and still has all his old gear, so I need to check the statutes for him.

I would think just owning them wouldn't be a problem. but carrying them around might be.

Bullet proof vests are illegal also I believe, not sure if that means owning them or wearing them out in public. I understand they want to keep them off bank robbers that may engage police in a fire fight, but what about those that just want to be safe. Silly as that might sound, wearing a vest to the grocery store, but you never know.

It is probably best to check your state statutes as they will vary. I have been unable to find any Missouri Statute prohibiting possession of handcuffs or bullet proof vests. I believe there is a federal law on felons possessing vests as well as in some states you can't own one even without a conviction. In some states, possession of a handcuff key is illegal if it is concealed and you don't inform the Officer.

There is a lot of good information posted in this thread by people that appear to have a lot more experience and opinions than I do.

That said, there was a major study done about 4 or 5 years ago on the relationship between mortality and other factors, including caliber of the gun used. Conclusion was that there seems to be no direct correlation between the size of the bullet and the ability to deliver a mortal shot.

The study did find a clear and direct correlation between the shooter's familiarity with the weapon and mortality. In other words, someone very familiar with a .22 pistol was more likely to deliver a fatal shot than someone using an unfamiliar .22, 380, 9mm, 40, 45, or whatever. The BEST pistol is the one YOU are familiar with.

Others have posted essentially the same concept above. So, whatever you get, get comfortable using it!

Yeah, this has been studied since "The Thompson-LaGarde Report" in 1904 and maybe before.

Some tests were pretty good and others not so much; some were too skewed by opinion and preconceptions.

I remember when the FBI concluded a 147 Grain 9mm "sub sonic" round was the way to go and they were sold only to Law Enforcement. Other agencies went with the light weight high velocity promoted by Lee Juras and some departments hand rounds made specifically for them such as the ISP 9mm +P+ round.

I believe Evan Marshall examined thousands of police reports and then wrote a book on stopping power and came up with some sort of index.

I have read a bunch of these over the years and even let them influence what guns I bought.

I am sure not going to argue wound ballistics, shock, temporary wound cavity effects, secondary missiles etc., I just carry what I can hit with and is small enough so I won't leave it at home.
