On one of the many forums, perhaps this one, that I've been reading recently some know-it-all posted that "all on-road and off road Diesel is now ULSD".

Nope -
Unlike ordinary diesel fuels, SuperGoldョ premium diesel fuel has special additives for proven cleaner burning, economical, premium performance. By providing quicker starts, less engine wear and reduced injector deposits, Southern States' SuperGold helps cut equipment downtime and lowers maintenance costs.

Available in both an ultra low sulfur (ULS) formula for on-road use and a dyed low sulfur (DLS) for on-farm and off-road use, SuperGold gets your diesel equipment started faster and keeps it working longer with:

From Premium Diesel Fuel at Southern States - Southern States

So, if you've got a use for LSD/DLS there is at least one supplier for now.

Also if you run a new VW TDI beware of the red fuel.

In my region, it's all ULSD. offroad, home heating fuel, etc

Same thing here. I have asked my fuel suppliers, 3 in this area, this question on more than one occasion.

As a matter of fact HHO is not popular here so they dont stock it per say. They just fill my neighbors tank with off road diesel.

What the "know it all" as you put it said-may well be correct-where he lives. Same situation as the Mainer from Aroostook County said. Its a logistics thing. On road diesel is ULSD-under 15ppm sulfur. True "Heating OIL" or No 2 fuel is not mandated to be low sulfur at this point. that will change.

If there is not enough demand in any given area, jobbers may in fact only stock ULSD. Why? Because you can legally use it for everything. It is stored undyed making it legal for on road. If you want to sell it as off road-fine as long as you pay all the hiway fuel taxes. If you want to avoid the road fuel taxes, thejn you MUST dye it red-weather it goes in off road equipment or is used as heating fuel.

The dye is strictly a tax issue. The IRS will routinely visit distribution facilities and check heating oil tanks for dye concentration. all this to avoid tax cheats. By the same token, if you are stopped at an on highway road check, not unusual for them to check your saddle tanks- any degree of red color? Be prepared to pay a big fine.

Hope this helps.

They switched everything over to ULSD back in 2010.

The EPA had it sceduled to take place over several years and stages .

But the industry went right to ULSD and skipped the other steps or stages.

Saved them time and money and done away with a storage nightmare .

1*Just because it may not be mandated don't mean it isn't already available .
Why create another fuel when you already have one ?

Not sure what you are trying to say. Its a matter of the law. the point is ULSD is used for all things IF the demand for heating oil (high sulfur) isn't high enough to justify separate storage/distribution systems.

And again. If you use ULSD for heat or off road diesel, you dye it red and avoid paying highway use taxes.

Keep in mind at these tank farms, it takes very little "high" sulfur diesel/fuel oil to contaminate the piping. Than when they run ULSD thru the same piping/valves, it contaminates it. And if you put higher sulfur content in my on road tractor trailer, it screws up my emissions side of my engine. Than the supplier may have financial issues. One of the many reasons why it's all ULSD. Bad thing is , this stuff is lower in BTU content. Less power, use more to heat house, ect. Not a big difference, but.....

Up here we still have LSD home heating oil. They sell a bunch of it. All heating oil up here is LSD and is #1 only. Even in the summer. I have checked many times. The reason they tell me is that it gums up in the toyo heaters up here in real cold weather. The ULSD that is.

The off road fuel, no matter #1 or #2 up here is ULSD. There are two tanks sitting side by side. Off road fuel or on road fuel is taken from same tank. They just have to add taxes if using on road.

Also, up here they dont dye any fuel. None of it. I know this guy, that knows this guy, that heard of this girl whos grandpa's good friend has this big ole tank of home heating oil and runs it in their VW tdi, dodge cummins, kubota tractor, and john deere dozer. Shame on him.

Trouble is, I really REALLY want to buy a Kubota M5140 in Tier IV Interim, that is supposed to run ULSD, but Where I live, there is only LSD . I get conflicing advice about using LsD i. It, from , " no problem" to " don't even think about it" to " just change the oil more often" to " expect total engine failure". ....
Ajy advice, experience, suggestion?
Or even, anyone know of a decent shape Kubota 50 to 70 hp machine, low hours, rops, no fel, for sale?
Thanks guys
