Hey BeezFun, just the roof material and the siding. All steel panels. All framing is wood. I did look into a steel building( framed with steel) but they were quite a bit more money. I don't remember right now how much more but it was significant.

Just recently read on here and elsewhere about heating with a passive solar wall. Guys building was like in wisconsin and he claimed it heated to 60 or so. Was real simple and interesting design. Easy DIY. If you have a good south face might want to consider.

Thanks Gittyup, never heard of this but I will definitely have to look into it. Of corse here in NY, we don't see the sun very often. Getting it to 60 would be perfect.

I look forward to following your build (barn and eventually house)!!! Best of luck. Looks like you're off to a good (and early) start. Keep the posts and pics coming our way.

Thanks amstaff, I think I am ready for crusher run. Going to be about 4500.00 just for the stone. Nothing's cheap. A few more picks of the site.

Great thread...looking forward to progress and pics!

Did you rent or own the dozer?

Hey Scoutcub and thanks. The dozer is my fathers. He is retired and lives on 350a of wooded property. He uses the dozer for maintaining the many trails he has through the woods and also to haul out fire wood. So I just have to pay to have somebody transport it to my property which is about 15 miles from his. Hopefully I will be getting crushed gravel on Monday or Tuesday depending on the rain

Looking good! Wow, you can save $15k by doing the work yourself?? Man, labor is expensive. And, 40x60 - will be barely big enough:laughing: A man can never have too many roofs on his place!

Darren, since your future home and barn will be at the bottom of the driveway I would make sure the barn is high enough out of the ground to prevent water runoff from entering the barn. When I had my Morton building built I wish I would have raised it about 6 inches higher as water comes down the blacktop driveway and comes close to entering the building. The guy who put the driveway in made a small swale in the blacktop to allow water to divert to the side of the building. This works but I should have made the building a little higher. You'll probably also have to make swales around the house and barn to "divert" water away from both buildings. Thanks for the photos and updates.

That's what I would have thought about Wisconsin too. But, he swears to it. And there are others that do too. Might not meet all your needs but is free heat that would certainly help on sunny days (I know, upstate is always cloudy in the winter). Need a nice south face with an good overhang (for summer). Beautiful up that way, but too many clouds (especially the snowy kind) for me.

Preparing the drive way and then the gravel. The crusher run was more difficult then I thought it would be. They could only back up to where the stone ended and then dump the whole load. Trying to spread the pile was a pain as the stone wanted to get wider and wider as you push. The stone went out wider then the driveway fabric which is all mud and soft. So when the next truck came and got off to the side a little, he just sank in and got stuck. Had to pull at least three trucks out with the dozer. About 300 tons of crusher run in all and that included the pole barn. Alot of money for a driveway. This time of year is not the best for drives as the ground is so soft. I hope this driveway will hold up. The fabric will help alot but how much? Anyway, the trusses came and are now down next to the site of the barn. Hopefully this weekend I can get some post in the ground.

The fabric, in my experience, can make a huge difference. For starters , it will keep the dirt from pumping up and the rock from disappearing.

Your off to a great start!

Hey everyone, I dug a pond last summer and it filled up great and seems to hold water. A few spots on the outside on the down hill side seems to leak just a bit. I don't think that's to much of a problem but what concerns me is the color of the water or ground where it comes out. I was wondering if there is something in the water that causes this? Any ideas?

Well, progress has been slow as the weather has not been good. The two weekends that I've had have both been rainy and wet. The only time I've had to work on it has been after work until dark. Either my wife and I or my father in law and I have set all the post so far. Hopefully this weekend it will be nice and I can make some significant progress. Here are some pics of progress so far.

Well, with a nice couple of days to work on barn, got a little more accomplished. Two more post to go and at least they will be done. To think the pole barn company would be in and out in 5 days just makes and I'd have it done. Well, knowing I'm saving a lot of money makes it worth it. Here are some pics and two of my main helpers. Still debating on the best way to put the trusses up and will figure that out soon as I will be ready for them.

Well, it seems like it has taken forever but I think I'm finally ready for trusses. I still need all the Y bracing at the top of the post but have a week to do them as the trusses will be set next weekend. That is the only time I could round up enough people to help. Can't wait to have a roof on as everything else will be easy and I can do it myself. Here are the pics to bring it up to date.

Still debating on the best way to put the trusses up and will figure that out soon as I will be ready for them.

Last week when I was at the JD dealer I noticed that they were using a boom pole mounted on the front loader of tractor to lift mowers up to work on them. I was thinking that if you could make something like that it could be used to lift a truss up. I am not a welder so I do not know how hard it would be to make it. Just an idea.

Hey Rick, I have thought a lot about doing something like that. Just wasn't sure how it would work as my walls are 12' and the trusses are another 12' for a total height of 24'. As the tractors lifting height is some where around 8-9', wasn't sure if I could rig something on the pallet forks or bucket that would make up the 16+ feet that I would need. I am going to have people there to help with the trusses and would hate to have them standing around if I couldn't get my lifting arm to work right. If the barn was a little smaller or with less pitch, I would probably try to rig something like that up. Just not enough experience with something like that to feel confident it will work. I do appreciate the suggestions though. Always looking for the best ways to do things.

Darren
